Hello,

I've been out of the drum loops for quite some time. Started with this new band recently and we're hitting the studio next week.

I was wondering what kind of snare I should be using for the recording.

I'll be using a 4 piece cutsom DW kit (which I know will sound fantastic), but I'd like to rent a couple snares "just in case".

Ideas?

Attached is a music file of a song we'll be recording. It's not great quality, but you'll get the idea.

Thanks!

Well if the DW kit includes a maple snare, then I would try to rent a brass snare. Something Black Beauty like. Also, try any other snare that will give you a notably different tone when hit with the snares off. If the DW maple is high pitched and the brass lower then try to get one in the middle. You get the idea.

You can also mix in effects afterwards and not worry about it too much.

Just to follow up...

I ended up using the Jimmy Chamberlin signature snare from Yamaha:
