Just looking for a general consensus
I've never played a DW snare, so if you had to buy one in the 14 x 6.5 size, which drum would you pick? Why?
I love the sound of drums w/ re rings. Here's a dumb question, the edge snare doesn't have them right?
Thanks, you people are the worlds best.

Edge drums are only available in full-inch sizes (6 or 7). I've got the 7 Edge and a 6 VLT. Personally, I think the Edge stomps the VLT; but it's also the only Edge that I've heard that I really liked. In my opinion, the concept of brass + maple really comes together at 7" more than any other size - it balances into a cohesive whole. The smaller drums to my ear don't have a really integrated combo of brass plus wood; it just seems to have weird dissonant overtones.
The 7 doesn't play much different than a regular 6.5 in response, but if you give it a good whack or hit a solid rimshot, you'll get a lot of the higher brass tones out of the drum. At medium volumes it's got some wood warmth and some of the warmth of brass, but with a little more bright edge on some of the tones.
DW's wood snares are nice, but I've yet to hear one that really knocks me over. The 6 VLT is the best of the bunch but it doesn't really compare to the 7.

hey thanks man for the informed review. That's not the first time I've read that the 7" edge beats the 6" edge. Love brass, love maple, sounds like my kind of drum, the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of snares.

I have heard a slew of dw drums. Including a 12 and 14" edge. I agree: the edge stomps the VLT. heavier, louder with a much more powerful rimshot.
The edge snares are easily my favorite dw. A friend of mine has a 12" x 7" that I'd like him to part with.
