I currently own a Starclassic Birch Bubinga kit and was wondering if I've got the bass drum setup right. For the batter, I've tried, the EQ4, EQ3 and Superkick I. For the resonant, I've tried the stock head and an emporer I had laying around. What I'm finding is this drum is very loud and direct. Not a lot of "Boom", but a very focused punch. Not that I am complaining, but is the primay sound characteristic this drum should have? Keep in mind I'm used to a '69 Ludwig 18x22, so my ears may need adjustment time. I'm finding that mic'd the drum sounds fantastic. Unmic'd, I'd like a little more resonant boom. Any suggestions or info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

The EQ3 is a 2 ply with a sound control ring. The EQ4 is a single ply head with an internal sound control ring AND a muffle ring. Super-Kick I: A clear, single ply, medium weight bass drumhead. The Super-Kick series features Aquarian™s patented Floating Muffling System. A narrow felt muffle ring is attached to the backside of the drumhead to produce a low-end, well-defined punchy sound........you're living right in the middle of the "world of punch".....no boom, no resonance allowed. Since you have an Emperor head at your disposal....try that batter. That's a 2 ply head (no muffling, no sound control ring, nada). I'll assume the stock factory reso. is single ply. Run that reso. That should give you more boom and resonance. Your Tama is a much different beast than your Ludwig. If indeed, your Luddie is a 1969, it's a 3 ply shell. With reinforcement rings. 22x14 and 22x16 were common sizes. I've never seen a 22x18 in a 3 ply shell.

I think the emperor would be a good choice or maybe a pinstripe.

hey guys
i bought ludwig element emo drumkit with a 20x22 bassdrum, 20" in diameter and 20" DEEP!
it's over at someone else's place for now though.
the kick drum sounds incredible, but what i understand from reading on this forum a bassdrum that is 22"deep is very rare and very bad in use?

I dunno. I'd say if it sounds good, it is good. Simple as that. :)

That is an odd size though...20"diameter and 22" deep?.

sounds pretty crazy but cool if your into that.
