Hole in the bass drum head!

Today I put a massive hole in my relatively new bass drum head. I'm pretty sure this is due to my beaters being significantly worn down; the beaters were hitting the head on an angle instead of parallel. Anyway, now I've got to shell out $50 for a new bass drum head and at least $50 for two new beaters (I want to get some decent ones).

Point is: CHECK YOUR BASS DRUM BEATERS! This isn't the kind of thing that's gets a lot of attention so I'm assuming that a lot of drummers don't pay any attention to it. If your beater is worn down and getting close to the plastic, it's definitely time to change it.

Hopefully this post helps someone catch the problem before it puts a big friggin' hole in your bass drum head.

You should also buy one of those patches made by Evans or a similar company.
They can prevent a hole form being punched in your drumhead.

I'm not sure how you put a felt beater through a head. I could see one of those sharp plastic ones, but not a felt one. How hard are you playing that thing? You may want to try learning to not bury the beater in the head when you play either. That is letting the beater rebound and not pressing into the head past its flex point. As for a new beater, I recommend the classic round felt ones (or round wooden ones if you want a harder sound) instead of these modern small sharp things. You get a bigger, rounder sound and don't have to worry about any conflicting angles.

Yep the big hard plastic ones by DW. Lol. I use a falm slam too. I've never gone thru a head. I have how ever broken a beater shaft.....now that was interesting.

Well, I definitely play hard, no doubt about it. However, even though it was a felt beater, after so much playing all the felt had basically disintegrated (for lack of a better term). and I was basically playing with a sharp plastic beater. And those classic round beaters are exactly what I had in mind.

As for changing my technique, I'm going to seriously look into it, because it may also help me out in the speed/control department if I can learn to let the beater rebound (assuming I'm not doing so right now).

lol my m8 did this he had some new dw beaters not the big square things the rectangle 1s if u know what i mean.

but now he has an evans head with the foam dampner strips that sit on the head and a patch a great feel and sound now will get 1 to replace mine when its nessarsary
