You'd need to use fairly thick cymbals for that purpose. Too thin pies will be utterly inaudible.

At the least the bottom cymbal should be fairly thick to attain any "audible" sound like Wavelength says.

Word. I used a 10 in Paragon and 10 AA Splash and no matter what was on top it stunk out loud. Just no good.

Watch out for the sizes of the bells of the splashes. If they are too small, the two cymbals will not be able to come into contact on some hi-hat stands.

this is key, with smaller hats or thinner tops in particular - good advice this...

i have only heard the file on Sabians site, but these seem pretty cool!
if you're gonna try your own set up, maybe try a china or a bell on the bottom, might help with the clarity/sound and the actual fit of the hats on the stand, what ever you do, keep us updated on any experiments!
good luck!

I'm with wavelength on that, splashes are too thin for doing what you want to do. I'd go for those nano-hats instead. Zildjian used to make a set of 10" recording hats too.

Still make them in 12"

These things are very crisp and if you make a mistake it will amplify it! Heard Dennis Chambers use a set in a clinic one time, incredible sound but he warned that they are so articulate that they are great in a studio but probably not the best or first choice for many live.

The wackiest combo I've done in splash size is using a 10" Alien disc as the bottom cymbal and an O-Zone splash as a top hat.
