Yes just as the title indicates discontinued as of Jan 15th 09.

Can't say i'll shed a tear over this announcement since the ones I sampled at the local shop were plain and simple just totally awful sounding cymbals period.

I saw a set mounted atop a demo Pearl ref kit. They sound like black ZXT's. Pretty wretched. Black alphas are an improvement.

THERE REALLY IS A GOD!!
I really don't see how they actually qualified as cymbals worthy of purchase, by any standards.

The hihats were moderately decent (but by no means something I'd buy over, say, New Beats), but the rest was garbage. They won't be missed.

Ha! What a joke. I guess those won't be on display at NAMM this weekend.

I've never seen such a junky sounding cymbal with as much marketing hype as these.

I guess Zildjian wised and realized "Huh? These really do sound like crap!"

I may be missing something, but where is the actual press release? Someone could just be making this up...

Or I could be wrong. But another forum is not a citation.

Well if it ever turned out not to be true by some slight chance it most certainly should be :}

If you don't see them on display at the Zildjian booth on Jan. 15th being tomorrow at the opening day at NAMM in LA there will be your firm answer on the subject....

Zildjian has some decent cymbals coming out though. A Custom Rezo line, K Custom Hybrid models seem interesting. I'm not sure what inspired them to make the Pitch Black models anyway. They replaced the ZXT Titanium and were quite similar.

I hope it's really true.
They just need to go away and then we don't have to see the ad anymore and be reminded how awful they are.

The shop has a few, haven't sold 1.

The 15" hats were (surprisingly) alright when I played them at GC, not great, but 100 times better sounding than anything else.

My shop guy said the 15" hats were the only ones he heard that didn't sound like crap.
The china...crapola, the splash...crapola....crashes.....how did they ever get put out in the market place?
Who thought they sounded good enough to put out--even aimed at kids or beginner drummers who's parents had money to burn?

For the amount of money for everything that went into producing it all...the ads, the packaging, production....I don't even want to think how much money they have to have burned on the mess that is/was Pitch Black.

Does anyone recall a product that was highly advertised and this big a disaster?

Besides the Catapult pedal by Gibraltar...that thing is stupid bad IMO. But it wasn't pushed like the Pitch Black, and can just fade away when they decide not to make it anymore.

I could use 4 of the 16 inch ones for hubcaps.

The thing is, the black color probably was a really good marketing move. I can see it being a selling point for a lot of younger punk, hardcore, and metal drummers. The problem was that they applied it to some of the worst sounding cymbals I've ever heard. If they slapped it on even some ZXT/ZHT-sounding cymbals, (which I'm sure they could have comfortably done at that price,) let alone something like the A series, they probably would have sold like hotcakes.

:D

I'm not doubting that it's being discontinued tomorrow, but I'm still curious: How did the person on that forum know? Was there a press release? I went to google news and searched for "zildjian pitch black," but nothing came up.

I think it was an industry insider who dropped the ball on the news on the other forum.

I think Zildjian hopes they will quietly disappear from view with no big announcement about it and spend some time to learn from this BIG hype and marketing mistake.......

It would be funny if Bernhard decorated the site with banners celebrating their discontinuation.

We all knew this was going to happen. but quicker than the ZXT Titanium? Impressive. I'm just very impressed by the speed of the execution...

Platinums, ZXT Titaniums and now the Pitch Blacks. At least Zildjian are trying new things, but you'd think that they would actually see if the cymbals sound good before selling them!

I just saw a video where TB is playing Pitch Blacks in a rap video, moved from a 24" K to pitch blacks. shame

Good riddance! how do they compare to the Black Alphas though? and isn't Wuhan producing black cymbals now?

IIRC there are Stagg "black metal" and maybe similar from Wuhan. They are not completely black, more of a "Oh man, I toasted my cymbal" look. Black alphas are real cymbals...they earn at least some respect. Pitch Blacks are everything bad about a cheap cymbal rolled into one.

I dropped by a music shop today. There were a couple of these cymbals set up. Absolutely dreadful thungs things are. They litaerally sounded like cymbals, begging to be released from the black "coating".

It's actually kind of sad really, no cymbal deserves this torture. At least its all over......Thats probably what people in America were thinking after WW1....oh boy. We might be in for another round some time in the future.

Only time will tell what 2009 will hold.

Just watch, in 40 years they will sell for incredible amounts of money on eBay to collectors. They will be peddled as the Edsel of cymbals. I'm snatching them up.

Shouldn't they have been bailed out, so they can keep producing an over-priced product nobody wants to drive, er, play?
