Remo A Vintage

I was wondering who has tried the remo A vintage head on his/her snare. Any oppinions?

I'm a ambassador user, but was thinking to try this on one of my snares.

Any experience? Comment?

I had a set of them on my toms. The 12" was perfect but the 14" and 16" had issues. the thinner second ply was wrinkled against the top ply resulting in very dead sounding drum. This issue is not uncommon with 2 ply heads but that was the first and last set of VIntage A's I bought. Just use standard Ambassadors now.

Haven't tried them on toms but I use them on 2 Ludwig snares I own. The V A's are only *slightly* thicker than Ambassador but I seem to really dig the feel from the 2-ply. They are very durable and easy to tune as well. I love them.

I currently use Vintage As on all my toms and have used them on my snare. Lovely sound on any snare (i think). The sound is slightly more controlled and get a slightly deeper sound but still very open. I would say its the best between single and double ply.

I also use Ambassadors (Coated) when I don't use Vintage A's. ONCE in a while I will use Coated Emperor just like Bonham did to get the similar sound on my Ludwig Supraphonic snare drum.

Green Shoes is correct, a slightly more controlled and darker sound with the Vintage A. Overtones are still there but less bright.

I don't like trying heads, because they are too expensive haha.

I have now, coated ambassador on snare and clear on toms.....maybe I'll trye, Suede on toms and vintage a on snare.....;I hope I like it...

(the suede must not give a big differance...)

I use the Ambassador weight white suede heads on the toms of my M Birch kit with clear Ambassadors on the bottom and they are excellent. I still prefer coated Ambs or Emps on the snare batter though.

im getting ready to try the vintage a's on my rmv kit because i basically didn't like the lows of emperors and ambassadors seemed to bright. im hoping the vint a's will hit the mid range and suit me well.

im being picky, but they seem to say they'll do the trick. didn't really answer your question but i'll let ya know.

Ambassadors have been the default choice of jazzers for ever. They will be fine.

If your think Ambassadors are too bright, go Vintage A then. Either should be fine so cant go wrong really.

its just that me toms sound a big high pitched, and its not that they are tuned too tight.....so i was thinking mabye a darker tone would bring the toms to a normal sound

it could also be that i have a sonor force 2003.....the heads on the toms are all sonor, it was a bad choice to keep using these, i should have splashed out on new heads...ah well, live and learn!

If you have a sonor 2003, I would certainly go for coated ambassadors for jazz. This because this drums do not have good resonance out of themselfs. With coated ambassador heads you will have enough warmth, and the drums will not sound more chocked than they already are.

ya they sound very 'pingy'......even when there tuned low....thanks for the tip


jazz funk and blues are the way to go

It's a great snare drum head - sounds and feels fantastic tuned high or low. More tone than a pinstripe or emperor, less muffled than a Powerstroke 3, more sensitive to the touch than CS dot.
