I have just replaced all my cymbals over the holidays with a complete matched set of Stagg single- and dual-hammered cymbals.

Got to say I am very impressed with them; they look good and they sound amazing. I was planning on keeping my Zildjian 20" Dark Ride as it had been my favourite cymbal for the last 8 years but it just sounds flat and lifeless when played with the Stagg stuff. They're really bright and can get some fantastic washes with the lightest touch.

I got:
- 14" Hi-Hat DH-HM14B Medium Brilliant
- 8" Splash Medium Regular SH-SM8R
- 10" Splash Medium Regular SH-SM10R
- 15" Crash Medium Regular SH-SM15R
- 17" Crash Medium Thin Exo DH-CMT17E
- 18" Crash Medium Thin Exo DH-CMT18E
- 20" China T-CH20

all for the grand total of £380! That's £30 more than I paid for the Dark Ride alone 8 years ago!

As far as 'budget' cymbals go, I would recommend these over the low end Zildjians any day.

Yeah, Staggs are really good cymbals for a low price

does it feel weird playing real cymbals with a electric kit?

If anything, it makes the kit easier to play with the acoustic cymbals.

I've been playing that kit for about 8 years and started off with the cymbal pads but as soon as I started playing it seriously again and playing live, I had to get real cymbals. Drum sounds are really good, especially if you take the time to set up layered samples and 'tune' them right, but you just can't replicate the dynamics of an acoustic cymbal with a lump of rubber and some electronics.

They're great for practicing on, but for live, you really need the range and feel of a proper cymbal to do the music any justice.

yeah i own that china - its actually awesome. I bought it with a splash (stagg myra) because i was looking for some FX and they were the best in the drum shop (out of Zildjians, Paiste...etc). SO worth the money and the sound.

Confused...

Are you using that 18" crash as a floor tom?

Surely that's hard to hit?

lol, yeah it's where a floor tom would be. I guess I'm used to that kind of set up, so it's not an issue for me.

I have nerve damage to my left shoulder, so have limited reach, hence the use of an e-kit. I wouldn't be able to use a floor tom effectively if it were in that position, but can ride that cymbal well with my right hand. It's also got a really crisp bell sound.

It's an unorthodox kit, for sure, but it is an absolute blast to play.
