Hey guys

So ya, I may have broken my arm.(Going to hospital on Monday) Not good! I did think about stopping drumming for a while, but then i thought "Travis barker played the drums with one hand why can't i". So i rearranged my kit (with help from my dad) and started practicing, I got my dad to take some pics to show you my new setup for a while.

I bet, at least you're trying.
Look at the drummer for Def Leppard, he's been playing with one arm forever.

try it...put your arm behind your back with out a stick and try it..

challenging. and keep doing it...with both hands so you get good at it. then when you have both of them back together, look what you can do..seriously..

and, thats good that your not going to just stop for now...i would do the same thing!

If you're going to play with one are, the logical thing to do is diminish the distance between each drums and cymbals, I suggest you lower your hihats and crashes..

Yes... I have made my hi hat a bit lower...and i have hardly any "drums" anyway.

why not try playing with the cast on ?
maybe not the first few days but a week after they put it on just play with the cast!

I did it about 2 weeks after I broke and chipped my wrist...

I even played a gig with my cast and 2 months later I played a gig with stitches in my hand from the same day :p

The most important thing is to just keep playing !!

Um, NOT a good idea. Don't listen to this advice. Not to be mean, but do what the doctor says. If you have the cast on, you can't play drums. It's dangerous to, and you could end up damaging your arm/wrist even more.

dude it's safer to play drums with a cast than without one since you arm is totally blocked.

the doctor told me I could so I figured it was safe... :p

But I'm not saying you HAVE to play with it just do as you like

Yer, well i didnt mean to put the stick there, it was their just from playing :) oh and its the right hand... im amazed how i can play with my left as its normaly playing just the snare!

Its "fractured" what ever that means...lol.. hairline fracture..

Take his suggestion. Use this opportunity to gain strength with your left arm. Your playing will improve quite rapidly I think.

And be sure to use both sticks evenly, so when you're arm gets better, one isn't more beat up than the other.

Keep pushing it! You might find yourself enjoying leading with your left hand after all this is over and you might switch to an open handed style which I am a big endorser of.

The exact opposite happened to me--I used to be open handed, now I am closed.

Thats interesting buddy. You don't usually here of someone closing thier approach when they are familiar with being opened to the kit.

Well, it's because I wore a cast on my entire left arm for 6 weeks.

Thats understandable, but your really closing yourself off. It doesn't mean that open handed playing is better... but it does provide one with a much easier and less constricted approach towards a kit and drumming in general. It's a matter of preferrence in most cases.

I dont think i would ever switch to open handed as i love having my ride were the 2rd tom should be (traditionally) and it would have to be on my left hand side... :)

When you try it you won't think its fun, you will find how difficult it really is :-)

There are a slew of different set-ups that enhance drummers with a strong left hand. Try it, see if you like it. It's going to be very difficult and challenging in the beginning, but you can only benefit from practice.

I'm actually better at gravity-blast beats playing open handed.

ok great. So i really ( i mean REALLY) like the sound of travis barkers snare in the song dumpweed, it kind of high pitched, but with a werid twist, would you be able to tell we how to achieve that sound? weather i would need a new snare or just tuning?

It basically sounds like a tight batter and a mid reso tuning. Snares might be a little loose against the reso which leaves that little tight flap sound.

Thank you soo much! do yo think the tuning as to be very precise as im pritty crap at tuning. Do you like that sound?

I don't see the tuning needing to be perfect but the drum definately plays a factor. Also, you have to take into consideration that his snare was professionally mic'd and run through a board. I'm personally ok with the sound.. but I like a bit more bottom sound from my snare.

Try the tuning configuration I mentioned and see if it works. Evenly tighten the batter and evenly tighten the reso an octave or 2 below the batter. Loosen the snares a tad if your not getting that nice flap sound. If it sounds too flappy, tighten the snares. Start over from loose heads if your not familiar with tuning and tighten the lugs in a star configuration.. not circular (directly next to one another) full turns to start with eventually breaking them down to 1/2 then 1/4 until the snare sounds the same at each lug. Batter head nice and tight and reso 1/2 to 3/4 tightness.

Experiment and have fun doing it. It's a learning process.

Man your soo much help! Thanks! im gonna totally redo my snare tomorrow! Take it all apart.. should i but some WD40 on the snare lugs? as they are not very smooth

No problem buddy. No, they probabaly will not need it but you might try a drop of its something you feel the need to do. I'm not a fan of putting any substances on my hardware. Proper maintenance is key to prevent rusting and proper climate control storage if you live in areas with high humidity.

Ok great!. high humidity in england in a garage no, it freezing which cant be good for my sabians and drums. i think i will put a bit of WD40 as they arn't the smoothest lugs in the world.
