I started with my five piece that has all clear remo UX? nighthawk heads. yesterday for $50 i picked up an Excel 5 piece set. I sold the bass and rack toms to my friend for 35, sold the snare and snare stand to MusicGoRound for 33. i kept the floor tom to add to my set, and while i was at MGR i picked up 2 remo emporer weatherking ebony heads ($3 each!) i added the other floor tom on my set, and tuned the two floors to match each other. the problem is the rack toms with the clear heads don't "match" the floors. Its just a different sound between the two. I've messed with the tuning for a good long time, so now im pretty sure the 2ply ebony head is what is making the sound difference. Am i right? and what heads would give me a sound that would match?

no my nighthawk rack toms have the clear UX's. The nighthawk floor had them, but when i got the Excel floor i got the ebony heads and put the ebony heads on the floor tom tops, and the nighthawk UX's on the floor tom bottoms. but the sound from the floor toms was distinctly different from that of the rack toms which were still all UX's. but i think i got it now. I put the nighthawk UX's on the floor tom tops, and the *quality* :D Excel heads on the floor tom bottoms. So now i have two left over ebony heads, which i found out are actually marching drum heads. yeah...

Ebony heads will have a darker tone to them than a standard clear head.
