Unfortunately, I haven't the time or money for lessons; but as a pianist and former school music teacher I can work out the solos just fine; but I do need some help. I'm working through the solos at a slow to medium tempo for accuracy and now am gradually increasing speed. How fast are these solos traditionally played? What would be a standard speed for a competent player?

Wilcoxen wrote a lot of solos and published a few books. While march tempo can be anywhere from 105 or 110 up to 132, standard march tempo is 120. That being said, some rudimental solos lend themselves to being played on the slower side and other solos gravitate to the faster side.
Many modern rudimental books include tempos, so it is easier to understand the composer's intentions. But use your judgment and play them at a tempo where you can cleanly execute the rhythms and rudiments.

Good answer Jeff, This question seems to come up a lot. And I wished I had asked Joe this. I like to play them at a tempo at which the rolls are smooth and open. It really feels good in the hands, and I think if any thing that was Wilcoxon's intention.
