Hi,

Steve Smith spends quite some time talking about the 2-on-3 (poly)-rhythm in his DVD. He says the swing skip beats are naturally in the pattern. I watched that section a few times but still don't get it. He is counting it too fast. Could someone explain it to me? I think if you are counting just triplets without polyrhythm, the skip beats are already in the "let" of "tri-p-let". I don't understand what he is trying to illustrate in that 2-on-3 example.

Thanks.

I don't know what section specifically you're talking about, but he could be referring to the ease of playing triplets over the swing beat as a 3-against-2 pattern...

one trip- let two trip- let

If this is way off (I wouldn't know), at least it's one more thing to try...

Is that what 3-against-2 is?! I always thought 3-against-2 is:

1-X-O-2-X-O- (triplet based)
1--X--2--X-- (2-based)

So, the skip beats in the swing (the "O's") doesn't align with any of the beats in the 2-based rhythm.

Steve is playing quarter note triplets against quarter notes, starting with the second triplet of one and three:

The notes line up on "2" and "4", creating a natural accent, and the last note of the triplet is also apparent in the "three" part of the polyrhythm.
