Hi,

For Christmas I want a decent but not too expensive wooden snare to try out some funky drums heads on and have found these two:

Sonor Force 2005 14x5" for £65 (which is the same colour as my kit!)
Sonor Force 3003 14x5 Maple for £95,

The 2005 is a fully birch shell where as the 3003 "features an all-maple shell for warm, full, bright tone with excellent projection."

Now, don't know much about either but both sound really good and a good price. What are people's opinions of these two snares and what would they choose plus why?

Grab the 2005. I don't think the 3003 is worth the extra £30. Both sound great, but the 2005 cuts through better(I've played them both). Plus, you get your colour.

Thank you - any more comments?

Like everything else as long as it’s local and you cab play it first. We returned the 3007 that came with my sons kit. Just a bad one I guess.

I can't help you with a comparison, nor tell you which is the best deal (don't know [and don't care, really] about British pounds vs. US dollars) but I'm wondering where you got the quote about the 3003? My understanding is that it's a maple/basswood shell, upgraded to a thinner all-maple with the 3005's... I bought a used 3003 kit for a second "banger" kit, i.e. one I didn't have to care about as much as my thinner-shelled maple drums.

I think the snare (and the rest of the kit) sounds pretty good- still has the stock heads on it. I know, they're old 'cause the drumset is 5 or 6 years old (the first 1003/2003/3003's probably came out in '02...?) but I bought them from the original owner who didn't play them much. The coating isn't even wearing off the snare's batter head and neither head was cranked, kinda lower-medium. So, I'm not judging it from old-ass thuddy dead heads, but they're still the stock heads. Take what you will from that. :)

Yer, read about that and it seems to come down to a choice between a birch snare and maple/basswood snare.
Not knowing much about woods, anyone shed any light on the differences?

But am starting to lean towards the 2005 for price, colour and seems currently no advantage over the 3003.

I owned a 3003 kit as well and never liked the snare, It is maple/basswood not all maple, I hope they are not advertising it as such.

I would go with the 2005 snare.
