Is there a volume 2?!

It just came out and it's absolutely unbelievable. I picked mine up about a week ago and my store said it came in that day. I can't stop listening to the tracks.

Feuerlink and drummmhead,

Would you mind to briefly describe what are covered in volume 2? And is it like volume 1 that one needs to get both the DVD and the Book/CD in order to gain most out of it?

Thanks.

I found this on amazon.com and I'm just pasting it here. I'm telling you, it's an unbelievable piece of work.

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The second edition of the best-selling original Groove Essentials features a DVD with 53 brand new grooves and over 100 variations for intermediate to advanced players. Students will learn the difference between ghost and grace notes (while being encouraged to experiment with both in all six groove "families") as well as important "go-to" grooves, like the Train and Bo-Diddley beats. For more advanced players and professionals, GE 2.0 introduces the concepts of groove construction, interpretation and manipulation- training drummers to think like musicians in order to maximize their full potential. The DVD features more than 70 new songs covering 4/4, 2/2, 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures, with three levels of difficulty for 5/4, 7/8 and 9/8 meters. On the 3-hour, 45-minute DVD, Igoe discusses and demonstrates each groove in multiple tempos, alone and with a band, with many patterns shown on both acoustic and on Roland HD-1 and TD-9 electronic drumkits. The grooves span rock, funk, RandB/hip-hop, jazz (sticks and brushes), world/specialty, extreme tempos, all-purpose, hybrid, rideless, classic and odd-meters. These tracks also supply a variety of fill-in and soloing opportunities to challenge advanced players. In addition, the book features Igoe's extended "global tours" that will test even the most seasoned professional's chops, creativity and stamina and, as a "first of its kind" bonus, there is a full-length orchestral play-along track designed to provide a taste of playing in a full orchestra, complete with multiple moving tempos, dynamics and feels!

My favorite DVD's are live concerts. But for drum DVD's:

1. Jeff Porcaro: Not very long, but unbelievable musicianship. I learn something new every time I watch.
2. Steve Jordan: Great groove playing with some great musicians. Makes me want to play.
3. Chad Smith: (The old one), cause I grew up learning from that vid.
4. Steve Gadd Up Close: What can you say, he's the man.
5. Big Time by Billy Ward: Good concepts that are easy to apply.

I left off Back to Basics by Dave Weckyl. Probably my sixth choice. In college we used to play a drinking game with that DVD...err...VHS actually! Every time Dave says "basic", "basics", or "basically" you have to to drink. Try it, you'll be sloshed!

Great stuff listed.

My add goes with:

- Matt Ritter : Unburying the beater.... yes, for the bassdrum technique and some more...

I think everything make sense in this DVD. Good for beginner to have a great start and for more advanced to revise their technique.

The only thing i'd change is Matt shoes :-p

Well, musically almost all drum videos teach something and are in someway ''top video'' to show certain style details.
Here is my list of videos that educate you how to play drums, not what to play.

1) Jojo Mayer - ''Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer''

2) Matt Ritter - ''Unburying The Beater''

3) Steve Smiths and Adams Nussbaums ''Art of Playing with Brushes''(this one show what to play in someway, but main focus is on how different original brush moves creates different textures)

In those three videos are almost all info that you'll ever need to know about drumming MOTIONS.

Last two positions I'll leave for any other video I've seen :)

Jojo Mayer - Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer
Matt Ritter - Unburying The Beater
Steve Smith - Drumset Technique: History Of The U.S. Beat
Thomas Lang - Creative Control
Tommy Igoe - Groove Essentials

I'm sure I'll be adding G.E. 2.0 to the list... I got so excited reading this post that I had to go and purchase it... NOW!

Mr. Ritter - Thanks for your gift of teaching. I picked up that DVD of yours a while back and I can't tell you how much easier anything and everything involving a foot and a pedal has become. And I personally didn't mind the shoes! :) On a side-note: I loaned it out to a student about two months ago... and he won't give it back! That's how good it is! :P

Thank you, Bipitta. Making a professional quality DVD turned out to be much more difficult than I originally expected. Responses like yours make me feel that it was all worthwhile. I greatly appreciate it.

Continued luck with your drumming, and Happy Thanksgiving.

1)Jim Chapin - Speed, Power, Control, Endurance (moeller technique, best ever!!!) (feet)

I learned Moeller with this tape. I know that Dom Famularo is trying to get it out on DVD.

I like the classic videos like Steve Gadd's In Session and Up Close, Joe Morello's Natural Technique videos and David Garibaldi's Tower of Groove just for the value of watching great drummers in action.

this is my 1000th post.

I like two right now. Walfredo Reyes jr and Jojo Mayer's. I saw Gaving Harrison's DVD the other day and he plays well with lots of feel but it didn't really offer me much personally. I want to see the new Steve Smith and Gadd DVDs but haven't seen them yet. Checked out Glen Caruba's DVD but the video transfer did not seem to work and the picture really suffered and it was hard to watch. I enjoy watching the Giovanni and Changuito duets DVD.

4. Steve Smith and Adams Nussbaum - ''Art of Playing with Brushes''.

My Top 5 for educational, "Bang for your Buck" Instruction, would be:

1) Tommy Igoe, "Groove Essentials"
2) Pat Petrillo, "Hands, Grooves, & Fills"
3) Jo Jo Mayer, "Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer"
4) Todd Sucherman, "Methods & Mechanics"
5) Steve Gadd "Master Series"

I think these 5 are probably the best out there for everything you need, because these guys are not only great players, but great educators..They are not "dig me" DVD's...(Dig me play this solo/lick that you can't do)

Hi folks,

Todd Sucherman's new "Methods & Mechanics" has been mentioned many times. Is it useful for beginner?

p.s. I bought Pat Petrillo's "Hands, Grooves, & Fills" with the expectation it would help me. But the grooves and fills are too funky for my level of skills... I want to build a good foundation first.

Sciomako

Thanks for checking out "HGF"! I think there are a few ways you can work with it if it is too difficult right now...(rather too hard than too easy, I guess!)

Here's what you can do..Take ANY of the play along tracks, and simply play a beat that you create that you can maintain at that tempo. It's 3 minutes of timing practice and locking to a real band that will totally improve our playing..

That's the beauty about the play alongs...you can play YOUR OWN THING, not just what I wrote..

You can also have a teacher take the essence of the grooves and right "easier" versions..I am actually doing that with a few other students who have emailed me for on line lessons.

Anyway, here's a sample of someone who simply is grooving to one of the tracks, making up their own groove! It's not exactly what I wrote, but he's doin his thing!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-4yUgPqX_Y
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JSLwKAgxDE&feature=related

You can do the same..

Good luck and just have fun!

jojo's dvd is great. i didn't think i'd be using free strokes, but i watched the dvd and sort of over time, thats now how i play.
i really like the newer modern drummer dvds, 05 and onward. with all the bonus interviews, it really lets you get an understanding about where other drummers are comming from and what's helped them develop.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Gregg Bissonette's Musical Drumming in Different Styles DVD. It covers everything...rock, blues, jazz, latin, funk, odd time signatures... It also comes with a pdf transcription of everything he plays. It has helped my playing so much.

To round out my top 5...

2. Steve Smith - Drumset Technique/History of the US Beat
3. Tommy Igoe - Groove Essentials 1
4. ' ' ' ' - Groove Essentials 2
5, Steve Smith/Adam Nussbaum - Art of Playing w/ Brushes

I'm sorry for being negative but I have to say that the mike portnoy dvd (in constant motion) and the neil peart dvd (anatomy of a drum solo) are really lacking in instructional material (they only talk about and demonstrate their playing). On the other hand I would highly recommend the secret weapons for the modern drummer, steve smith's dvds and antonio sanchez's master series dvd.
