View Full Version : Struggling With "Bounce" Feel

So I hang out with a lot of "Gospel" style drummers, and I feel really inept because that quintessential swung "bounce" feel doesn't come naturally to me like it does to them. I can fake it somewhat, by more or less playing a half time shuffle, which helps me to keep the triplet feel swingin', but that busy sound is really pretty much never called for and ends up sounding way too cluttered.

Importantly, I thought that simply developing some vocabulary in this style would help fix the feel without directly meaning to, but that hasn't been the case. And this is crucial because I like the sound of these New-Jack and Go-Go-ish grooves, but also because I've been noticing lots of local groups using this feel more than I might have guessed they would, suggesting that it's sort of an essential.
