I think joshisaces needs to grow up and give all music a try. As for playing Ac/dc, I've been playing there stuff for the past 18 yrs. and it's fun and there is no more dependable, solid time keeper than Phil Rudd. He lays down the foundation to keep the AC/DC train rolling.

Anyway for the more intelligent among us, I just learned Lawyers, guns, and Money, not very difficult but alot of fun and alot of room to make up some creative fills.

Also still trying to nail down Cissy strut but when I play it with the guys something does not sound right, awesome song though.

I also love to play some AC/DC, Shake a leg is my favorite so far, just gets me pumped up. and Dream on Aerosmith.

I like your taste ^ ^ ^ ^. I just finished a Smashing Pumpkins session. Mostly the Siamese Dream cd. Geek USA is a killer freakin song to play imo. Jimmy Chamberlain, WHOOOT!!

Am I the only one that tends to stick to whole albums at one time? I guess its kind of a compulsive thing.

AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, whatever suck.... IMO

I know it's your opinion and all...but how can you say this? I haven't really listened to the chodos, but I know enough to know they're "alternative rock". You realize the only reason they're playing this stuff is because classics like Zeppelin totally influenced it, right? I mean, I doubt that the "alternative" genre would be around with out bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, etc. Sorry but wow...

Anyway, lately I've really been digging some stuff by the Steve Gadd Gang. Simple, but just so groovy.

I'm busy practicing the songs for my band which would be (in order of hardness, or maybe just how much i suck at them, most to least)

Hand of Blood - Bullet for my Valentine (totally suck at this in terms of foot technique)
Stricken - Disturbed
Clouds Connected - In Flames
Animal I have Become - Three Days Grace

You guys play sucky music.

You should have a bit more respect for the bands that inspired your modern alternative and emo bands mate.

And you post sucky comments, LOL...

Oceansize: Efflorence cd. This cd has boggled my mind for years now. Its sounds easy at first, but once you get into it, its really frikkin hard! Check em out if you re into progressive(P.Tree/Opeth/???)

Ian W, I dont always stick to one album at a time, but more like I have to play a whole album through, then move onto the next one. I might hit 4-5 cds' in a 3 hour set, or play the same cd(usually Tool) a few times in a row. Then change bands. Alot of time spent tryin to get it "right" ya know? Its that damn compusive thing again...

Yes. And there's no flams or rolls throughout the whole song. Which makes any mistakes REALLY stand out! It's great practice for all your basics. And it's harder than you realize from the start.

Quite winded and a bit sweaty at the end. ;-)

I'm now "trying" to tackle "Girl Gone Bad", by Van Halen. Geeessshhhh...How does Alex get his bass foot(leg) to become rubber like that? ;-)

This is a real workout, folks.

And just think, I thought "Hot For Teacher", was the only REAL difficult drum track on "1984".

I decided I was getting complacent & challenged myself: I'm drumming to Battles. All I can say is good luck. I can handle Snare Hangar and Tij but Race - In: forget about it. Fun stuff though.-

Hell yes. I loves me some Battles. Back when I was first learning to play, I was pretty heavily into Helmet, and always loved John Stanier's grooves with them. Race-In has actually become one of my "benchmark" songs for my advanced students. Basically, when you can pull that one off, you're starting to get your sh*t together. ;-)

It came out a few months before graduation, and I remember 2 songs that were played on the radio quite regularly, "Heading Out to the Highway" and "Hot Rockin'".

Recently I've been playing a lot of heavy metal.. and when I've played a few songs I groove for a bit and then I continue with the metal.

Songs that I've been playing are songs like:

Laid To Rest - Lamb of God (It was hard until I was able to control my kicker more, but that's only for one part of the song.)
Walk With Me In Hell - Lamb of God (Difficult)
Blacken The Cursed Sun - Lamb of God (Same goes for this one as Laid To Rest.)
Afterlife - A7X
Before I Forget - Slipknot
Psychosocial - Slipknot
Porcelain Heart - Opeth (My favorite song and band atm.)
And of course my band's songs.

I usually warm up with songs like Sunburn - Muse or Like a Stone - Audioslave. Easy song to change and warm up with a double-kicker. (Not talking about Sunburn.)

Hi.

I have to learn a song for a show upcoming in march 2010. I know I got almost a year but I want this to be done as perfectly as I can. I've been playin drums for about 5 years now (and I quite wasted my time, I started practicing seriously about 2 months ago.)
Here's a list of the few songs I like to play. I do not know the exact correct fills for each song, but I play them.... 95% accurate I'd say. (I am also self-taught.)

Blue October - Hate me (slow and fun to keep tight on time.)
Chevelle - The Red (theres a couple of cool fills in this one :))
Metallica - Entersandman (99% accurate, I didn't learn the ending by heart)
Foo Fighters - The pretender (2-3 Fills in the 3/4 of the song I'm not doing correctly.)
Porcupine Tree - Shallow (very cool to play, but I can't do all the bass drums in the chorus, even tho I do the hardest part on the kick, I can't play the kick line on time If I try all the hits.)

The song I need to learn is Strung out - The kids. It's a pretty cool punk band and the drummer isn't bad at all. If any of you has some advice, or can give a listen to the song and feedback me on it. I would be GRATEFUL!

Any advice, suggestions and tips on the song are appreciated. It is a pleasure to read all of you drummers on this forum.

EDIT: I need to precise that I got a contract from a music school in my local area, and I'm a bit proud of it, knowing myself as a selftaught beginning drummer. I do not know any theory and I can't read drumsheets well.

Keep on drummin!

~~Phil.

Hi all.

I've posted on YouTube a couple of recent songs I recorded myself playing:

Toxicity, System of a Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4AF2i8KRWc)

Dreamline, Rush (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtpQgZnLcQY)

I have other ones there, but these are my better ones.

Later on down the line I'd like to cover Van Halen, Kansas, Journey, Yes, Cheap Trick, The Police, some jazz (haven't decided yet, but most likely a Buddy Rich tune or two), and others. I like to make it as challenging as possible, even if I screw up!

I look forward to seeing your videos!

I can't stop playing Frantic by Metallica!

Personally I think Frantic is one of Metallica's worst songs...awful lyrics...terrible sounding drums...crappy guitar riffs, but each to their own! It's all about their first four albums for me.

hey,
I've been working on 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. I'm doing it just for fun as I doubt our band will play it, but it is "classic rock"! I remember hearing that song when I was a kid thinking the beat was so cool. Another classic I never learned and wanted to was "Rosanna". I actually never learned either of these (I know shame, shame shame) Alot of it was because I had so much playing going on when I got to college. I barely could keep up with what I HAD to practice. with private lessons(much of which is mallets), piano, band, orchestra, percussion ensemble, and jazz and pep band, also shows like operas, musicals, etc. It makes for some hectic but very fun and rewarding experiences. I don't think my skill level was up to these when I was in HS.
I think so far with 50 ways , the hardest part after learning the famous pattern is switching between the 2 (vs and ch). Anyone else have problems there? anyone have any tips on this tune or Rosanna?

This is one I'm always working on, including the ,Oh sh#t, mistake, The Sheriff, ELP.

If you younger drummers haven't heard it, you should along with ""Living Sin".

[QUOTE=VicPhil;572624]Hi.

I
The song I need to learn is Strung out - The kids. It's a pretty cool punk band and the drummer isn't bad at all. If any of you has some advice, or can give a listen to the song and feedback me on it. I would be GRATEFUL!

This might help, similar beat but slower.

Grace by Jeff Buckley. Matt Johnson is a brilliant drummer and some of the stuff in it is quite hard. Almost there, just transcribing along with it so others don't have to suffer the way I did.

Nice one, White Rabbit.

I'd not heard Jeff's music 'til the mid-90s when someone suggested we play Last Goodbye. When they first played it to me, it took a while for me to get my head around it - a quirky arrangement. He seemed to liked re-interpreting repeated progressions more than doing the verse-chorus-middle 8 thing. As time went on I enjoyed playing it more than any of our other tunes. I've never played to Grace but I imagine it would be intense ... pity a singer trying to do it LOL

At the moment I'm loving playing along with Miles Davis's So What. It has the most lovely tempo and feel - at least for an old, lazy duck like me :)

I feel you with the "too much going on in HS". But for Rosanna, here is the transcription. http://www.respectthegroove.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/dc_shuffle_groove.png

The first line is Rosanna and the second is just cool. Fill in those eighth rests with ghosts! And the major thing here is to start out slow and pay attention to playing it with style and not just chopping out.

Have fun!

Mean old world- from The London Chuck Berry sessions.
It is a bluesy song with Kenny Jones on Drums.
I am adding several bluesy tom tom rolls in between, kind of over playing though, I am sure if Chuck Berry listen to my playing, he would kick me out right away.......(. thats why I play in my basement! :))

Try setting a metronome 30 bpm set to 16th notes. Play an 8th note feel on every second beep so that you can find exactly where to play the 16th ghosted notes. This tempo is slow enough to to help you focus on dynamics and accuracy. Good luck.

Well since you asked I have been working on some Frank Beard Stuff Like

La Grange..........ZZ Top
Heard it on the X .......ZZ Top

sounds easy you say...........well just give it a try.
La Grange uses the Texas Shuffle and to make it souond right you have to do it very powerfull.

Heard it on the X.......is well... good old rock N roll with a little twist.
