View Full Version : What song are you playing on drums?

dude, rosanna and fool in the rain are halftimeshuffles... or if you like 16th-note triplets...
Did not realise you were specific regarding those songs. Yes, set the metronome accordingly. When beginning a new technique, regardless of what it is, take it one note at a time and play very slowly with a metronome. Advice given to me many years ago by David Garibaldi. Very good advice.
Good luck.

Oh yeah, I didn't really mention.. it's not that I can't get the ghost notes down, exactly. I can play the ghost notes fine with the bass on 1 and 3. Or I can play the whole beat perfectly without the ghost notes on the snare. But I was just having trouble playing the actual bass pattern with the snare ghost notes. Not sure why. But I'm getting it now :)

Slowly working on "Everything She Does is Magic" by the Police. The constantly (most of the time) moving hihat accents and sloshes are giving me fits.
I have what seems to be an accurate transcription, but this is going to take a while!
Update: Just read an old interview with Stewart Copeland where he says that they did six drums overdubs on this song and he enjoys watching bands try to cover this song.

Just began playing again after a 20 year layoff. Six months ago I started with a practice pad and the stick control book. Bought a nice yamaha e kit last month and found that while the speed and strength were coming back nicely, the time was not,
Ive been working with an instructor and the groove essentials book.
When not working on rudiments or the book, and just playing for the fun of it I have been playing the following songs just because 1) they are fun to play 2) simple time signatures 3) rock solid time
"You shook me all night long" by ACDC- Rudd can really lay down some solid time
"Let's groove tonight" by Earth, Wind and Fire
"September" by Earth Wind and Fire
"Fantastic Voyage" by Lakeside
"Get down on it" by Kool and the gang
"The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac
"Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac
Jane by Jefferson Starship
and working on
White Room by Cream

I have been playing along with John Mayall's new album Tough! Great straight ahead blues. Will be seeing him live in a couple of weeks. Maybe he will ask me up on the kit!
... Mmmmm, probably not, but if his drummer gets sick, I am ready!

John Mayer's version of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" from the Battle Studies album. Steve Jordan lays down a simple kick-snare-hat beat with no fills that's awesome to groove with. It's also a good beat to practice open-handed (with the left hand on the hi-hat).

lethargica by meshuggah
the 4/4 snare going on through all the poly is driving me nuts, and as there is nothing remotely hard technical/coordination wise in that particular song the cycling snare is the only thing that you might actually mess up. as simple as it seems its pretty tough especially because the song is pretty slow and its not too easy to feel the groove inside the polyrhythmic riffs while keeping the bass drum in sync with the guitar

I've been digging Porcupine Tree lately. Groovy as heck and incredibly imaginative! Gavin plays so tastefully and builds layer upon layer of intelligent textures. It is very fun to play, and quite challenging!
Tony Williams Lifetime is another in the playlist. 'Fred' is farking FANTASTIC and about as hard to play as anything I've ever heard. Hear it HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr3Rj4t79v0) on youtube. SENSATIONAL!!! Dih-dih-disshh Dih-dih-disshh Dih-dih-disshh Dih-dih-disshh BOOM!

John Paul Jones - B. Fingers
(instrumental piece that has a great steady groove that starts on the 16th right before the 1, which is fun to play around with)
Soundgarden - Applebite
(nice slowish beat with some interesting time signature changes, but nothing too complex)
Them Crooked Vultures - Elephants
(Dave Grohl has great energy in this song)
RHCP - If You Have To Ask
(funky swingy groove)
Stone Temple Pilots - No Way Out
Puddle of Mudd - Cloud 9
Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice
Tears for Fears - Head over Heels

Today I was playing along to "Home at last" from Steely Dan's Aja.
This song was the precursor to Rosanna, and much cooler. Jeff Porcaro was really trying to cop Bernard Purdie when they did Rosanna. Babylon Sisters from Gaucho would be another one.
And then I played Three of a Perfect Pair by King Crimson. There's something that is just soothing to me about their music. It's timeless even though the sounds they used in the '80s are a little dated. Another soothing moment from KC is the section in Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream where half the band played in 4, and the other half played in 13? I think? When they did this song live, it was funny to see the audience just stop during that section with that "what the hell is going on?" look!

Warning!! The Dan Police are here! Babylon Sisters was actually on Aja - it's one of my fave tracks of all time. Agree that those two songs are way cooler than the whiny Rosanna and they still have that impossible (for me) half time shuffle with the triplet ghosts, although sans Jeff P's Bo Diddley accents.
Having said that, I've been practising to a drumless Rosanna lately, but playing it in my style with quarters on the hats with 1/8 note ghosts. With all the accents, that's challenging enough for and old slowhand like me :)
TOAPP ... just listening to it now that you've reminded me ... no one seems to make music like that any more :(

Here in the states, Babylon Sisters is not on Aja. You may want to check again, or maybe that's what they did for the Australian market?
As for TOAPP - nobody but King Crimson made music like that! They seem to have that market cornered. And when people come along with stuff that sounds like it, they have to openly admit that it's a tribute to KC. That Bob Fripp....what a guy!
It would be really nice if someone had a drumless track to "Home at last". That Purdie shuffle is simply stunning!
BTW Pol, I have a great picture of my wife with Tony Levin. We had coffee in the same coffee shop in Hollywood one evening before a California Guitar Trio show. She loves that guy. He was really appreciative of the fact that we didn't bug him in the shop, but waited until after the show while he was signing autographs!

Wow, I must be going senile! I was sure it was on Aja but Mr Google tells me that I'm losin' it. Apologies from this former member of the Dan Police (medically retired).
Agree about KC - they were so unique. LTIA blew my head off, tho' admittedly I'd done a pretty good job on my brain cells by then. It took me a while to adjust to the change of direction with Discipline, but once I got it ... wow! What gets me about Crimmo is the mind-blowing sound they have always produced, right from that very first album. Would have loved to have seen them in their heyday.
Cool to have a shot of your wife with TL. What a talent ...
Maybe you could send a PM to Bernhard to see if he knows where you could find a drumless Home at Last? Yeah, BP is da man.

Very interesting list, by the way I was just listening to: Lightning Strikes Again - Dokken, Under Lock and Key album.
Thanks, I'm a product of 80s hair metal bands. I used to have Under Lock And Key, it got stolen. I found Dokken's Greatest Hits and love it.
Today I played along to "It's Not Love" --Dokken-- and "Wheel In The Sky" --Journey--

I've been working on Candlemass' "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" album lately. Until about January - February, I was having horrible tempo problems - it was becoming a real problem for the band class I'm taking in high school, and my drum teacher suggested I bring slow songs to his lessons because it's harder to play slow than it is to play fast. It really helps, since I never really developed a sense of tempo because I was never able to get a metronome and had to practice drums from recordings!

The songs I play through daily are Rosanna and Keep Forgettin' as well as the whole Aja album. I feel that gives me a good foundation as a sort if beginning drummer. I also usually play through a few more basic rock songs like AC/DC and Mellencamp stuff.
When I just want enjoy myself I put on the first Dyno 4 album and play along with that.
Coming up with a drum part for Girl With One Eye [Florence and the Machine] because a friend of mine plays and sings that at a nearby open mic place and I'd like to join her at some point. Idly considering doing the same thing for a couple of others, including Schoolin' [Everything Everything] - I've got the backing tracks and I'm just noodling around with them to see what I can come up with.

My bands just starting out and we have our first gig next month so we're just learning basic stuff.
Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm
The Undertones - Teenage Kicks
Biffy Clyro - 57
System Of A Down - Deer Dance
Blink-182 - Dammit (yes, I know I went on a rant about Travis earlier but this song ain't that bad)

If you mean on my own
Old Biffy Clyro stuff, Loads of Led Zeppelin, Some Coheed, Some Every Time I Die, Some more System of A Down, Sunny Day Real Estate and more.
Also playing quite a bit of jazz atm too

Time-Pink Floyd
November Rain-GnR
Heaven-3 Doors Down
All slow and steady I know but, set within a practice routine allow me (after 4 days of owning my drumset) to keep steady time while still having fun, plus, I'm already nailing the fills in all songs (exciting for me, probably not the rest of you lol)

I did a note for note transcription of "Jump" by Van Halen and have been reading it down with a cover band that I work with. Alex Van Halen plays some really great broken up back beat displacement stuff on the instrumental/guitar solo section that he layers with some really cool ride cymbal bell and bass drum patterns. It's really musical and very organic.

Getting into "I Will Sing You Songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NroC3agrS8)" by My Morning Jacket next to the existing repertoire (whoo, sounds so swanky) The drums are not just decorative (http://www.fashionforhome.co.uk/decorative) in this song. Though I'm looking into something more up-beat for the next piece.

Great, aren't they? They're my standard jamalong fare. I'm obviously not slick and skip the hard licks in favour of holding it together, but their tempos and volume are closer to that of my band than most, which is nice.
Josie is my fave, where I do a brain dead version of Jim Keltner (but still pick up the 9 beat break near the end).
I play Aja too, and apply my Charlie Watts speed fills to the solos :)

if you havent read this you will love it , absolutely LOVE it
