I am looking for a good book that would include styles of indie pop or rock. My main focus is the two hand High-Hat Style and implementing it with fills and such. The type of indie music I am talking about, or a good example that I can think of is the artist Ra Ra Riot in the song Dying is Fine. Or most of Ra Ra Riots songs I have provided a link.

Any Help is greatly appreciated. Maybe there is something else you think might catch my eye(including artists or other drummers in this sort of style) I would like to know about that to!

Thanks!

Ok I am going to ask a dumb question, what the heck is "Indie" The word came about to talk about independent labels. How did this become a style of music?

There is nothing special about the style. The drummer is just hitting the hi-hat on the off-beats. I am not sure if that is what you were talking about when you described the hi-hat style. Its simple enough with some practice. There is no specific book that i can recommend only because what he is playing is really simple. I guess any old rock-drumming book would do. Sorry i couldnt be more help.

in my experience, indie music is more or less bands like bloc party and interpol or presidents of the us.its a very -and i say that liberally- basic type of rock and is more lo-fi.
i think what hes talking about is what my teacher taght me at one point and called them "disco beats". take the most basic rock pattern but play semiquavers on the hi-hats except when your right hand hits the snare
hope im helpful

sorry about the double post
also i would llike to point out you will NEVER have a book written aboout "indie" style drumming theres just nothing that should need explaining if youre just trying to learn to ploay along with your fave band.
but the type of stuff your talking about is covered extensively in rick latham's advanced funk studies

Just get Realistic Rock by Carmen Appice. I'm pretty sure this book covers it all, rock-wise. There are sections dealing with 16ths-on-the-hi-hat-four-on-the-floor kind of pseudo-disco beats that those bands use.

1. Indie refers to anything independent, such as what you said your self, an independent record label or bands starting out on independent record labels usually not signed to a major until there is gained popularity (usually very bright and upbeat in general not to say there is no slower songs). But there is without a doubt an indie style, in my opinion its a warped alternative because just because you listen to cold play or Death cab for cutie does not mean you will like Ra Ra Riot or Say panther. Everyone defines music differently I know what indie is in my head but that may not be what you think as Indie. That is why there is so many variations such as indie pop or indie rock or indie alternative. I ask you how does anything become a style of music? In my opinion there is enough music similar for there to be a call out for the style of indie.

2. I never said what he was doing was special the drummer is not a legend that's for sure. I am just referring to the "Two Hand High Hat Style" derived from disco, nothing more not saying he is taking it to some other level or anything.

3. Luke that is what I am talking about usually low fi due to low quality equipment of either home recording or independent recording studios but the sound is preferred to them.

Thanks Ian And Luke I will look into both books! people are so critical these days I maybe should have changed the subject of the thread but I understand there is no INDIE BOOK or it wouldn't be so indie would it? That is why I asked about "a book that would include the styles of indie pop or rock." Mostly derived from Rock and Two hand disco.

Thanks Again for Everyone helps and remember I am Just a friendly fellow drummer.

Indie music sounds likes Pop music recorded with sub-par equipment. At least to me

well to me, theres mainstream rock, and then the alternative rock was the kind of music that was less mainstream and less about the radio play. but then eventually alternative rock became mainstream, and now the 'alternative' music is indie. thats just what i feel

Actually, a good friend of mine and a great drummer/teacher wrote an incredible book from an indie rock drummer's perspective(that also works well for any style). I think you can buy it from his site it is mydrumlesson.com.

At the end of each section he has examples of songs that have the general feel of the material covered in each section. stuff like belle and sebastian, sunny day real estate, don caballero, the flaming lips, jets to brazil, etc etc

I teach about 35 of my students from this book with great results. Despite what anyone may say, some of the best and most creative musicians that i have seen and known are the ones that slip under the radar of mainstream music.

I agree. Most indie drumming can also be called rock; and this book can give you some cool vocabulary.
