View Full Version : Yamaha Seamless Snares?

Hey Yamaha fans,

I know Yamaha used to make their brass snares seamless, both the normal brass and the Garibaldi signature snares. However, the shells are now welded, I believe.

Are any of Yamaha's brass or copper snares still seamless in construction? I've heard the Manu Katche signature snare is still a seamless shell, but not sure.

I'm trying to find a good 4x14 brass snare, preferably seamless shell. I'm also interested in the Manu snare--I've heard it's basically Yamaha's "Black Beauty," but with better strainer, etc. (versus Ludwig's quality problems--and long backorders).

Any thoughts? Musiqman--any inside knowledge?

Thanks!

Ill get back on this one, but beside that:

Why seamless instead of welded?

And I dont now if it has a BETTER strainer, as a mather of fact I (and a lot of other drummers offcourse) don't like the strainer at all. The B type strainer is a really standard strainer, and not so stong at all (I've changed it on my 10x5 SC snare to a H strainer and G butt)

Why seamless? You once recommended that I look for older Garibaldi or copper/brass snares with the seamless shells, so I figured these models were more desirable in sound/quality? I've also heard others tell me to try to find seamless Yamahas.

If the seamless vs. welded shell doesn't really make a difference, then that makes my query void, I guess. If the 4x14 brass nouveau, current Garibaldi snare, or the Katche snare are all excellent choices, then I'll just have to choose one.

Regarding the strainer, my experience has been that just about everyone makes a better strainer/snare lever than Ludwig's P-85 crap. The Tricks and Nickels are the nicest, but Yamaha's aren't too bad. If the Yamaha Manu snare is basically a "Black Beauty" (what a drum shop friend of mine says) but with a better snare lever/strainer than the P-85, it might make more sense for me to go with the Manu snare than a Ludwig BB--more affordable.

Thanks for the feedback.

The Older Garibaldi models had a Seamless shell. Also the DG has a blue coated laquer and the Brass not.
It depends on what you like

So it depends on what you like, can find (from what I remember, the seamless shells aren't made anymore so that makes them harder to find) and offcourse if you dig David ;)

But offcourse there's a whole big difference between the 14x5,5 (or if you can find it 6,5) Manu and the shallower 14x4,5 DG in look and feel but most of all in sound.

Also the Manu has die-cast hoop's wich the most BB's havent.

My new Yamaha SD-4103 baby. Its the same as the DG (14x3,5 seamless brass) only not blue and with another badge.
