View Full Version : Christmas wishes...what are you hoping to get?

With the holidays just around the corner, I was curious as to what others are getting or are hoping to get in terms of drum-related gifts. Since nobody was likely to know what I wanted exactly, I decided to get myself my own gift. I ordered a set of new Ludwig Vistalites in Jellybean colors. In order to match that '70s sound, I also picked up a new set of Paiste 2002s. I'm sure my significant other will be surprised to see what she picked up for me. I'm not 100% sure that the Vistalites will make it before the 25th, but I've waited 20 years for a set of these, so a few more weeks won't make much difference.

Anybody else know what they want or what they're getting?

well i asked for new heads bt considering i just had a not so sound proof sound proof room built thats probably my main gift, might get like 60$ for heads though, then my Gf is getting me a wuhan China/splash pack (16", 10") and some Vater sticks and my sister is getting me a 12" wuhan china (put the splash on the 12" china as a stack) also asked for some Turn it up and lay it down CD's and 2 gibralter boom arms, and my farthest off wishes are a DW 5000 pedal and a 18" paiste giant beat multi, but ya lol, vstalites are nice man my drum teacher has a whole room of vintage drums an old vistalite from the 50's i think?

I'm hoping to get a new pedal and a couple of cymbal stands. The Trick pedals look very interesting, especially the Dominator.

I certainly appreciate all the sentiments outlined by others below. TRK, I hope you get home safely and soon and get to play that drumset. I'm sure I speak for everybody in noting that we appreciate what you're doing. I was in the middle east years ago under what I gather were different circumstances, and I can safely say that it can be a pretty harsh environment even in the best of times. As for the rest, yes, it's a crazy time of year, and the economy is a rough one. I guess I'm justifying my drum purchases as my contribution to the economy. Plus, my drums seem to be a better investment now than any stocks.

As for my Christmas list, all of my Paiste 2002s have come in, so now I'm just waiting for the Vistalites. For the 2002s, I picked up a slightly down-sized version of Bonham's set up--22" ride, 19" crash, 18" crash, 15" Sound-Edge hi-hats, and, for me, the surprise of the bunch, an 18" Novo China. I really love that thing--a china with a playable bell, and one that sits nice and still on the stand.

Paiste 2002's, Iron Cobra double, Wuhan China, a decent throne, better batter heads, ah the wish list goes on.

How do you like those 2002's? Bonham was my idol when I was a teenager. I especially used to like the fallout of his crash cymbals. To me it sounded like I would visualize a star shower. Do you happen to know, on Led Zeppelin III, was he recording with Big Beats or 2002's?

From what I gather, Paiste 2002s weren't introduced until 1971, and the album came out in 1970, so I would guess it was all Giant Beats on that album. I've read that he mixed Giant Beats, 2002s, and even 602s until the mid-'70s, when he switched to all 2002s.

I have a 24" 2oo2 Ride, 18" 2oo2 Medium Crash, 20" 2oo2 Ride (used as crash) & 15" 2oo2 Sound Edge Hats, and I think they sound amazing.
I've had some Sabian AA & Zildjian Avedis cymbals, but I definitely prefer these Paiste's.

And since Led Zeppelin III was released in 1970, I assume Bonham used the Giant Beat cymbals on that album.

Oh, and for Christmas I'd love a 24" Paiste Giant Beat ride :D, pretty expensive though -_- :P.

That's a nice set up, Crydevil. Hope you get your Giant Beat. Even with my new 2002s, I still would love to get a set of Giant Beats. I couldn't find them anywhere and ordered a 24", but it had a dent in it. I switched to 2002s because I could try them out in person, and they have more variety. I suspect I'll get to the Giant Beats eventually. Both series have a great classic rock sound.

Thanks Shoedaddy, I really recommend the Giant Beat series :). I own a 15" Giant Beat hi-hat and they sound amazing. Loud, but amazing.
So you should definitely try to find someplace where you can try them in person :D.

Gibraltar and LP make some nice stuff, Drummertist. Enjoy.

Crydevil (and others)--one question about Giant Beats. The one shop I just visited had some hi-hats and a multi 20" (not a complete set as I wanted). But the two had completely different finishes. The hats were that very dark brown/bronze finish, while the 20" was a bit lighter with an almost greenish-bronze tint. Is that typical with Giant Beats that the finishes differ slightly? My 2002s are all exactly the same, even though I bought them from two different places.

some Sabians: 14" AAX Xcelerator Hi-Hats and a 20" Vault V-Ride.

my family has no clue about drum stuff though, so they're just giving me money that I will put towards the cymbals... that way I don't blow all of my new car fund on cymbals...

No worries, GBs are known for the different colors. I don't know how they end up like that exactly, it's some part of the production line... the firing or something. Anyway it doesn't really make a difference although I'm sure some of them sound slightly different from each other. When I tried out big beats at the store the 14" and 15" hi hats were different colors. Pretty trippy. Killer set up btw, cant wait to see the jelly bean vistalites set up with the 2oo2s.

I already got what I wanted for christmas so you can all be jealous... probably the third time or so ive posted this picture on the forum lol

I'm hoping for some new drum mics this year, I was very lucky to get a snare for my birthday just a couple of weeks ago, so I don't expect to get some really fancy stuff for x-mas because of that. Anyway, I have a good feeling I may get drum mics, most probably 3x Beyerdynamic Opus 87, and a bassdrum mic. Allready have a nice snare mic.

Finally, I get to play them in person. I just brought them home today. The set is made up of a blue 16x22 bass drum, a yellow 8x12 tom, an amber 16x16 floor tom, and a clear 6-1/2x14 snare. I know I should leave 'em wrapped up for a couple more weeks, but I just couldn't resist (and they didn't fit under the tree). Here are some pics...

Dear Santa... I've been very good this year (I think so anyway), so I would like the following gifts: a new set of Ludwig legacy classics in silver sparkle with a new black- beauty snare to compliment it visually. I realise this is a pretty tall order, but I still believe in you after 44 years. P.S. If the 26" bass drum is too big for your sleigh, please let me know so I can call Fed-Ex freight.
