Hey guys,
After a 20 year lay-off from drumming, I decided to get another set and start playing again. About a year ago I purchaced a Pearl Forum set. After experimenting with different head configurations, I was able to get a decent sound. Now that I'm back in the groove I want to upgrade to a better set, because I'm running into the limitations of this basic beginner's set. Everything is just cheap, thin hoops, bass drum claws bend, shells out of round, etc...
I've been looking at the Tama Superstar, Gretsch Catalina Maple, Mapex Pro M, and Yamaha Stage Custom. These seem to be good quality intermediate kits.
The biggest gripe I have with the Forum set is I am constantly tuning, snare, toms and bass. I don't remember having to tune a set as often as I am having to do now. I re-tune the entire set every 2 - 3 days. The snare will loosen after just 2 hours of play. Is this the effect of cheap thin hoops? I use the stretch method when I install new heads, so I don't think it's normal stretching. How often, to you with better sets, have to re-tune?
