I started to practice stick tricks some time ago. i can do a few, but I don't know how to use them while playing.
My question is, in which situations do you usually use stick tricks, and which stick tricks are the best to learn?

Stick tricks are fun, and make it enjoyable for people to watch you, just make sure your playing doesn't suffer so you can do a twirl.

I only do a few, Sometimes I like to hit the snare and kind of snap the stick up, so it does a quick spin in the air, then I catch it about eye level. Hard to describe though, better to show.

I also do fake twirls in my right and left hands, Just spin the stick between your pointer and middle fingers like a propeller. Works very well for quarter notes and looks more complicated then it is.

I know this isn't really relevant, but I don't do ANY tricks at all. I can barely even do a fake twirl. If you're good enough, you can entertain the crown without any aesthetics.

I soak the tips of mine in lighter fluid for a couple hours before the show and then light them up right before my 9:48 long drum solo. I dance and spin and twirl like a Pyromaniacal Whirling Dervish (9:48 is as long as they'll go before burning out, leaving me grasping a couple of charred stubs).

Sigh.

I can put a stick in each nostril and play a mean single stroke roll

That's an interesting... talent. As for me, I can only spin it (Th real one) but can't manage when playing.

I was actually inspired by some of Jojo's clips on this site to try out certain tricks and now I have a whole arsenal of them - twirls, juggles, backsticking all sorts...

The only real place I can think of using them is in an all out solo. Not a solo when you're part of a band playing a song... but a solo just for a solo. I've done a few and stick tricks really give the non-drumming crowd something to cheer about.

When it comes to stick tricks, the easier and more flashy, the better. Nobody has to know or care how hard they are to pull off.. just that they're visually appealing. I think Nutha J once put up a thread on twirling. The Blackwell twirl is amazingly simple, but visually appealing.

I usually try to throw(haha) in a stick toss with my left while playing 2's and 4's. Either that or a twirl (real one). Not too difficult and it certainly ups the atmosphere.

When playing a mean snare solo, I crouch down, stick out my tongue, balance one stick on it, and use the other stick to hit my tongue's stick onto the snare. This can be applied with the nose, face, leg, etc.

Also, if you play punk music, and you need more force than you're already playing with, standing up is awesome too.
