My Latin Percussion Jam Block, the blue higher pitched one, came in today. Now, I had some worries here, because I've never seen one in person before ordering it. I've been meaning to get a woodblock for some time, but the things are expensive and there seems no real good way to mount them anymore. I've heard plenty of the LP Jam Block in the big red version and never intend on buying one of those (memories from marching band practices......) However, this blue one actually sounds like a woodblock would and not some obnoxious plastic thing. You can play the edge with the shoulder of the stick for a more clave sound as well. It's amazing how many uses you will find for this thing, although I bought it specifically for old-style jazz and latin stuff. Check these things out, they aren't like the red ones really, although having both might be interesting. Another advantage is that they aren't going to break like woodblocks do over time.
