View Full Version : my kit(s)

So here's my setup! I have it configured so that I can swivel around to play either my dws or the v drums. My symmetrical setup for both kits also lets me play completely ambidextrously and everything and its so much fun to play. Maybe later I'll put up sound clips of me playing so you can get an idea of the things possible with this configuration.

awesome and unique. are you a bill bruford fan by any chance? he also likes a kit set up flat and symetric like that. great colour too and your room looks way cool and tasteful; a good surrounding like that can be inspirational.
huge paiste ride. you are my kind of drummer already. name your cymbals dude, and yes, post some playing if you can.

nice sets man! love taht finish on the dw. like how you got the floor tom set up right in front of the bass, but doesnt it get in the way of your knee? what kind of snare is that with the acoustic kit? black panther? ive been thinking about buying one myself. an ya, put up some sound files of you playing.

wow, dw make some amazing stuff. just wondering, why are your rack toms going bigger smaller instead of the opposite way?

07-13-2005, 02:48 AM
Yes I am actually a huge fan of bill bruford. The shirt I have on in those pics is from the Yes album Fragile, which he is on! I got the idea from seeing bruford's setup, but I put the toms closer together in order to reach with either hand very quickly and easily.
On my v drums the drums from left to right around the snare drum are
3rd tom, 1st tom, hi hat, 4th tom, and 2nd tom. I can get some amazing sounding fills while flowing very smoothly around this setup.
Due to the size of the 4th tom of my DW kit, however, it doesn't fit where i want it with the bass drum there as well. This week I'm ordering an off-set double bass pedal to try it out because that would allow me to put the toms where I need them.
For cymbals I have a 20" Dark Energy Ride Mark I
16" and 17" Dark Energy Crashes
and 2 Stagg splash cymbals
The snare isn't a black panther though. It was a prototype Mike Portnoy Signature Snare, so it's one of a kind and sounds amazing.
And I also fixed up that side of the studio with ALL of my hand drums and drum machines
I'll put some more pics up later and sound clips maybe too

You said it lol. The close proximity of all the pieces of the kits feel so nice too, its like everything is just laid out in front of you for easy reach, without feeling cramped.
And some more recent additions include a tama bill bruford signature auxillary snare among other cymbals and drums for a giant array of world percussion big and small. Maybe later I'll put a new post of the fun haha

That's pretty cool those center double beaters like that. It allows you to pushe the bass drum much further to the front and away from you body! I always wondered what it would be like to have a remote pedal that plays a bass drum way of to the side (ala Weckls' secondary kick), so that you could have nothing but cymbals and toms laid out before you, without any regard for positioning due to the bass drum.

yup Yes is my favorite as well ... it's so much fun playing along with the albums on this kit too. and I live pretty close to philly as well! When you first start playing a set up like this, it takes some getting used to, but then some really great ideas for fills and grooves and solos start coming that are like nothing else I've heard. It was also great exercise for my brain too, having to figure out how to play along with albums with new stickings to accomodate the setup. Second nature now, so now I'm always just experimenting alot with fills linear grooves and all sorts of things that sound wicked around the kit. Plus, the standard fill down the toms 1 2 3 4 is sooo cliche! :-P

Hey aahznightsky,
Great Kit that you have there!
Would you tell me some details about your experiences with the dw cable HiHat?
Indeed I'm planning a setup close to yours (I really was quite surprised seeing sombody else with that kinda Bruford setup ;) )
The centered HiHat is a must! But which model would you prefer?
There is the 9502LB (http://www.dwdrums.com/hardware/9502LB.htm) (cable)
and the 9550 Universal Remote HiHat (http://www.dwdrums.com/hardware/9550.htm) (cardanic)
Unfortunately I never had the chance to test any of these ones. In Germany it's quite impossible to find a dealer who has these expensive toys ready for testing. All I heard is: Cable is booo! Cable is not sensitive to play! Cable is cable - dw ain't better than any others! I kinda refuse believing that...
By the way: Few weeks ago I saw Bill Bruford's Earthworks live in a small german province jazz club. It was the greatest concert experience I've ever had! And It's of course not only about Bill Bruford. Tim Garland impressed me as deeply as the young pianist the played with. Great great great. It's yet another universe above Random Acts Of Happiness...

actually just TODAY i traded in the 5000 series pedal for the 9000 (which is the 9502LB). The 5000 was o.k. but the 9000 feels like the real thing! I would definitely suggest the cable rather than the universal too...leaves more room open for whatever you wish (i got a double bass pedal for instance). and you HAVE to post some pics when you get your kit i would love to see it!

Hmm very interesting indeed. So you think that there is no "wibble-wobble" lagging feeling while playing that HiHat? I was able to test an old Mapex one and it was awful to play because of that delay between hitting the pedal and the resulting chick-sound. The wire seemed quite elastic to me. No chance for precise playing. Now tell me what cable length do you play and is a shorter cable better for a more direct feeling? Or should I get a long one to realize a smoothly curved cable for less friction?
You see I'm so unsure :o. Nobody yet told me somthing different than cable is bad to play. Convince me of the oppisite...
And yes of course I'm going to post some pictures of my setup but It'll take a few weeks cause things have to be imported...
But not that you think I'm getting a kit expensive like yours :-) Actually my one is a 3000 series Sonor Force in honey maple...

I have never tried any cable length other than 8 ft. which is what i have, and there's no lag.
I would go ahead with the 8 ft. length, again for help getting around all the pieces of your kit, especially whehn you have such a different set up ( if i got a shorter cable it would get in the way of things (not just double bass, but the bottom rims of toms and such as well).
If you can't try one before hand to see for yourself, just trust me ... there's absolutely no lag!
You tested and old mapex one; of course you didn't like it! Hehe...
But tell me, what cymbals are you planning on getting? And also, will you be set up more balanced, symetrical and easy to reach like me, or spread out with the ride to one side like bruford? You should experiment with both but i think you'll enjoy mine better hehe...
edit: oh by the way I found out yesterday that the finish is Emerald Burst over Birdseye Maple ...

Yes even as I saw that thing from distance I could tell that this is bad quality ;-)))
But tell me, what cymbals are you planning on getting? And also, will you be set up more balanced, symetrical and easy to reach like me, or spread out with the ride to one side like bruford?
For cymbals I'm planning a setup of turkish Istanbul Mehmet and italian UFIP cymbals. These two manufacturers are what I experienced so far the only ones who produce cymbals that sound really warm, earthy, jazzy and honest (like the old Zildjians) even in lower price segments. What disturbs me concerning today's cymbals is that most of them sound sythetic. They are made by machines and sound like machines. I'd like to make a trip to Italy/toscana where you can visit the people manufacturing the cymbals at UFIP personally and choose your ones out of the factory's store. Of course others like Paiste, Meinl or Zildjian have such cymbals too but very much more exclusive (and expensive) and that is not what I am searching for at the moment...
The absolutely symmetrical setup is absolutely natural I think. The most important parts of the drumset are HiHat, Snare and Bass. Consequently it's logical to put them in the very middle to be able to play them with both hands (feet) equally. Fact is: just technologically it was not possible to build a kit up like this so far. But today the possibilities are given through advanced hardware - so do it!
My ride cymbal will be right of the kit I think at least as long as I have to call myself right-handed ;)
aahznightsky
08-03-2005, 07:33 AM
just wondering... why the ride would be on the right if the hat is centered for the reason of accessibility to both hands?
aarbo
08-03-2005, 11:04 AM
Oh at the moment I imagine, just hypothetically, that a ride that is mounted above the HiHat is not playable in a relaxed way. Just because it's so high. I like it very much to have the ride as low as possible for really relaxed playing. But sure I will experiment with that...
aahznightsky
08-03-2005, 08:37 PM
actually upgrading to the 9000 cable hat from the 5000 helped me with my ride too ... it's alot smaller, so it can be lowered a bit so my ride was able to be lowered as well ...
one last question; how long do i have to wait to see this thing?
aarbo
08-03-2005, 08:50 PM
how long do i have to wait to see this thing?
Hehe, if I was the one who has to decide: three seconds :D
But I think it's gonna be three weeks minimum. Things have to be ordered, money has to be made... And until it is kind of completed? I really don't know...
I promise to send you a message when I loaded pictures up.
So long - take care and practice ;) I wished I had such ideal surroundings for my music like you obviously have - take this chance!

i was looking up on bruford the other day and discovered that he actually has two rides on either side! makes sense to me now hehe. but if you don't wanna buy two rides right now (a cool thought nonetheless) the dw 9000 cable hat leaves plenty of room for a ride that's not too high at all (which i discovered to even better when i corrected my posture recently)

Nice kit, man. If I ever played it, i'd probably cry because... well, far too intense for me, but I own three four piece kits...

Just wondering, what do you do when you have to play a regular kit?
haha i just dont like regular kits anymore dude. I switched to this set up for a ton of possibilities ... everybody sets theyre drums up the same and get the same fills and same everything to some degree. So now I'm getting things that I've never heard absolutely anywhere. But man, when I have to play a regular kit, it just feels so boring! I've completely devoted my playing style to my setup, so when I play something else I'm missing out on so many things ive learned ... my speed and power and groove is there for the most part, but even something is missing from that. I just don't have any amazing ideas for regular setups and it seems to ooze boredom from my pores and I can't play well ... im gonna suck so bad at guitar center's drum off!
For the high school jazz choir which had its first rehearsal of the year today after school, I set things up wacky just to make it interesting ... making due with the limited hardware, I got the hi hat and ride to the left for mainly open handed playing, and put the three toms right behind and circling around the snare in the order 3 1 2 ....
I now hate playing regular kits! lol
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y186/aahznightsky/stuff001.jpg
I'm planning on getting three new cymbals and then my plans for this kit are complete... I'll post a new thread and it'll be insane ...

When are you getting that kit?
Hehe miles_smiles just asked for that german province club where I saw Earthworks. I told him which club it was... sorry for that german interlude but it's much fun to switch language :)
Just yesterday I spoke to my local drum dealer (www.kdrums.de, take a look at his vintage drums!) and he is now trying his best to get me both HiHats the cable one and the universal one (thank you Norbert). I'm gonna post some test results when I played both. I wonder how my decision will be.
In addition I urgently need an 8" tomtom and a cracky 10" snare and some hardware parts to realize the new setup. They will come soon but later...
Nice new photo of your setup. I like it very much as you can imagine. Just looking at it is stimulating my crativity and my hands want to play. The fact that it is very tricky to play ordinary drum phrases with that setup forces you to create new things. Wonderful!

The fact that it is very tricky to play ordinary drum phrases with that setup forces you to create new things. Wonderful!
Just wait till you get your kit! You're not forced, you just come up with new things very easily and naturally as your hands flow aorund the kit. Plus it helps with your drumset "choreography" trying to play ordinary drum phrases aorund this kit. I've found that on any kit in any wierd setup, I can now play the ordinary stuff just cuz I've trained myself to figure out stickings faster than i can play them so. And we'll definitely be having some cool discussions on phrases we can do with this set up! I already have about a million unique things going on so I can give you a headstart lol, plus you can share the million possibilities that I missed and you picked up!

It's so unconventional! I love it!
But, I'd hate to get hooked on it....
Not every drumset provided for students will have a cable hihat pedal.
I'd try not to become too dependant on one setup; that's the beauty of tearing down / setting up so often!

No worries. I still play on conventional kits regularly. Not that I love them or anything (so unimaginative! so cliche!) but I work on them fine. Of course, there's also the fact that I'm not a student and I'm not gonna be needing to use anyone elses drums ever so there ya go.

I don't know if you already answered this, but where did you get the Off Set pedal? I visited the website and they don't have any price or any other information. The pedal is the kind of thing I could use.
There is an ad for an offset pedal in the back of most issues of MD. It is not the sonor, IIRC it's much less costly.

Well if you want the pedal, when you go to the website (www.pointtremolo.com) you obviously need to click on the link to the pedal and you'll get an abdobe document (get the program). And on that should be the number to call if you want prices, shipping, details, or anything else.

Yeah...that's the one. I was going to look it up in an issue of MD. I couldn't remember the name of it.
Pricing: Off-Set Double Bass Drum Pedal
Factory Direct - $292.00 + Shipping + Handling + C.O.D. Check or Postal Money Order.
That is one hell of a lot less money than the Sonor ( $779.99 + Shipping).

It's a whole lot less expensive than the Sonor one, and IMO a much much better feel. Sonor has a very different feel than most other pedals in the market, and they feel very foreign to me.

aahz, it seems like your set would be fairly difficult to play in a traditional grip. Fancy kids with their fancy grips.
Traditionall grip can be done on this kit, but it just defeats the whole point of the setup. My kit is about balance, ambidexterity, and symmetry. The ability to play the same possibilities on both right and left sides of the kit ... and so on
plus everything is placed exactly symmetrical and stuff and so the left side isnt in the best position for a traditional grip player hehe ...
btw brand new heads on today ...
hydraulic black on snare, hazy 300 snare side
EC2s on toms with G1 clears on resonant side
and the EMADs on both sides of the kick which make it sound more amazing than any bass drum I've heard in my life!

haha i just dont like regular kits anymore dude.
I now hate playing regular kits! lol

and ideas for what head to put on it? I've really been enjoying it as a timbale-like sound for latin grooves and but also with the snares on as the main snare of drum n bass grooves... so what head would help out both aspects??? i wonder

yeah and new gear on the way i think ill start a whole new thread when it comes
maybe not till december though
two more Dark Energy crashes and a signature thin China 18"
and ill explain this whole method of moving around the drums and cymbals thats pretty darn cool (hint - the crashes will mirror the drums)
im also looking into a kit that i can actually take on smaller gigs for school and stuff - perhaps a Manu Katche signature hipgig and some jazzier cymbals - i wanna try out the New Signature Dark Dry ride and some Signature jazz hats and swishes... anyone try these guys out?

In the pic of ur bruford snare it looks like its made of velvet or sumthin. Suade?.
And i was inspired by ur set-up so it tried it myself, only it didnt work. i dont have a cable hi-hat but can u think of another way of doin this sort of thing without buying a cable hihat? Or any ideas for a weird set-up like urs. I realise i had ur input in my thread on 'drum kit set-ups' but i bet that u could just create a nice weird, and totally unique set-up with a drum kit, so i was wondering if u could give me a few suggestions on that and also on how i could get it like urs, cause even tho i coulndt really get it b4, i really liked playing that way. I dont no wat u mean by 'linear' fills (sounds like maths 2 me) but i got some really diff fills out of that set-up.
This is my hardware and stuff to help u. (i dont want to sound like im telling u to create a set-up, i just would like ur help on gettin it a bit like urs without buying new things, cause i liked it that way.) Altho in my thread every1 said to invisiable play and put things where u want them, that helped getting them into the right pos, but i never actually changed my set-up because when i inviasble played i dont have as much as experience as u so i really only knew 1 place to 'invisialbe' play each item, and i would love to have a unique set-up so any help please.
Anyway this is wat i got to work with.
Sonor 503 - 22"X16" Bass Drum, 16"X 16" floor tom, 13"X11", 12"X10", and 14"X 5 1/2" Snare, Paiste 302 hats 14", Crash 16", Zildjian Scimitar ride 20", Wuhan China 16", Wuhan Splash 10"
Hardware - Dbl braced hi-hat stand, dbl braced straight cymbal stand, dbl braced boom stand, single braced boom stand, boom arm and clamp, 2 seperate tom holders, bass pedal. and thats it.
thanks E

Well I have about a million crazy ideas for setups that im gonna try someday.
But as far as getting this setup without a cable hihat ... I came up with something close with the kit I play at school. And the toms are mounted on the bass drum even!
This setup was helped by the extremely shallow toms of the Pearl Rhythm Traveler but itll still give you ideas...
one of the main things is the mixing of the order. Not jsut mixing up the order of the toms, but also the cymbals and percussion too!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y186/aahznightsky/IMG_0224.jpg
oh yeah and an update on the kit. Went to Dale's yesterday and bought a few things. A Tama Piccolo snare, a Wuhan china, and one more Stagg splash. So within a couple of weeks to a month I'll have two more DE crashes, a Paiste china, and one more splash to complete my plans....

The splashes are Stagg. I absolutely love stagg's 8 inch splashes. A ton of character and musicality. Theyre exotic sounding and live up to the DE splashes I've heard and at 200 bucks less!
I found one more great sounding one at the shop the other day, and a wuhan china.
And later today I'm ordering two more DE crashes they'll get here around the end of the year. Ill get one more stagg splash (four splashes four crashes in diff. pitches to match my toms), and then a 22" Traditional Medium Light Swish will be coming around febuary. then my set's complete!

oh man, i bought this dvd last week! how did you manage to find a stream of the entire thing? Hehe, I really can't answer this question. I browsed around on billbruford.com and clicked on a link and another and another until I totally lost orientation and there it was. I instantly knew that I had to bookmark the stream or it would be lost forever. Must have been kind of the "page-nirwana" where I found it.
and just to be honest, i found out from this and a few other dvds i bout with Bruford's name on it, that I really dislike the music he's gotten in to after Yes. That was all I had heard of him all my life before. Not to be rude or anything, I'm just saying that it really wasnt music I personally enjoyed. Oh it's quite the opposite thing with me. I listened to Bruford for the first time on the King Crimson Vrooom Vrooom live album where they play in the double trio. I was impressed and started to analyse his playing from this point. What I like most is everything with Tony Levin and the late Earthworks recordings.
So the Bruford I like is definately the late Bruford.
But I can comprehend what you say.

Well man that's the most important aspect of my kit, at least to me. Every part of my set is right in front of me and easy and comfortable to reach.
The only "downside" is that the toms aren't right next to each other. I have finally gotten around to practicing being able to do descening/ascending rolls with just the toms, and at least it helps me with getting between pieces of the kit really fast. But i don't consider it a bad thing, when i want to, i have more facility from practicing that, and i get so many interesting fills by moving around the oddly ordered drums.

Just ripping thru the toms in order has been beat to death, I would rather hear something more thought out. Your tom setup may not allow you to do fast ascending rolls but it will force you to think about your fills more and in the end they'll be more interesting IMO.

As others have said, great kit! Just reading through this thread and checking out your photos has given me a lot of new ideas for my drums.
The offset pedal you have is really intriguing to me. Aside from the advantages it gives you in laying out your set... how do you like the pedal? Does it compare to a traditional name-brand high end pedals? Is is sturdy? How is the feel? I'd just like to pick your brain because there is so little info about that model on the web.

actually I find the hi hat placement much more comfortable and easier to play ... two days ago I rearranged my set with traditional four piece positioning ... it's fun to play, but there are so many things that are trickier to do ...
The main problem is with crossing over to play the hi hat. I'm so not used to that anymore (for instance figuring out how to move my left hand from the snare to the hi hat ... do I pull it out from underneath and play it to the left of my right hand, or just move my right hand to the left a little and keep my hand crossed to do it - you can see that in gerald heyward's video in the media vault of vicfirth.com). So that whole dilemma is confusing to me, so i'm playing it open handed for the time being hehe.

Now that is a sweet kit. Your really going for the Bill Bruford theme aren't you? He has his kit set up symetrical also, and youve got his signature snare.
By the way, how does that Mike Portney signature snare drum sound?
And in that pic i swear theres a trash-can lid to the right of the screen. Nice........

yup Yes is my favorite as well ... it's so much fun playing along with the albums on this kit too. and I live pretty close to philly as well! :-P
I'm just getting into yes and bill's playing. Really great stuff but i find it funny that you say the standard fill down the toms is cliche since it seems to me bill does that fill alot. I guess thats how it became so cliche. Question, when your playing along with albums, what kind of headphones do you use? Also how well do you try and learn a track before you play along with the album(especially with half hour yes songs)? I find myself just playing my own thing along with the music more often then playing whats on the album. First post by the way, hope to become a regular around here.

When I drum along to music I use a pair of Sony MDR-V900
MDR-V900 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00001W0D5/002-6821429-0028861?v=glance&n=172282) series headphones. Completely pro quality, the link to amazon has a pair at $150 although I forget what I bought them for at the time. They're the same pair I use when I actually cut drum tracks in the studio.
As far as playing along with albums, I prefer to memorize every single note the drummer plays. I find it more challenging that way, remembering and perfecting all the details. I think that it's better as far as practicing goes. That even goes for when I'm playing along with pop records, there are some serious players in some of that stuff (btw Jason Mraz's "You and I Both" is great fun to play with). When I'm playing along with Yes I'll generally play it fairly note for note, or at the least, figure for figure, I might change the instrumentation a bit for fun. If I'm playing along to Moby or something, I sometimes like to let loose with a cool solo somewhere in it...
btw there's a song I might let you guys hear soon, it's in the middle of getting mixed at the moment ... and yes I have added actually 6 cymbals and one drum since these pictures were taken. But the drums are setup right in the corner and I can't good pictures (low ceiling) until I move them out.

aahznightsky

actually what I was writing has nothing to do with orchestration. It's all possible combinations of accented and non accented notes in groupings of four, five, and seven notes. I just used T and o because it seemed one can easily tell the difference between the two. If I had a music notation program, that would be ideal, but this is almost as good.
So I'll write out the other stuff later, but its basically the quickest way to develop indepence against certain figures ... playing a repeating pattern with a limb or limbs, and with the other, play through these different bits I wrote out. I'm gonna make a thread in the technique forum when I write everything out.

My symmetrical setup for both kits also lets me play completely ambidextrously and everything and its so much fun to play. Maybe later I'll put up sound clips of me playing so you can get an idea of the things possible with this configuration.

So if you want photos ... you're gonna have to wait a little longer. Like i said before I can't get a good angle from behind the kit because the ceiling is angled down in that direction and there's no room for a complete shot. OK, maybe i'll try to get shot of some sort now... the best i could manage was getting all of the cymbals in the shot. Barely.
I might bother doing a real photoshoot soon considering that I'm about to pull apart my kit in a little while. And when I put it back the way it normally is I might set it up in a different room first and submit pictures to MD.

Well everything is still on my kit, you just can't see it. The swish is a little further away in the picture cuz I had to move it to mess with my bass drum ... but usually it's a little further than the bell of my ride. I love that hat Dimitri. If you don't want the percussion and snare, then I'll give you my mailing address...
Sorry Dunc. I have big plans, with little drums.
Actually I don't yet but I will. Besides I need the stuff for studio work anyways. I need to show pictures of the studio sometime too (now with Protools on a g5 and everything hehe)

Not at all, it's just in the range I need. I can hit the far side rim at the most, and that's all you need to hit. So that means its closer and more comfortable to hit the usual rimshots. And usually that's all with my right hand. I can reach it with my left of course, but generally when I'm hitting that snare, I'm also using the cowbell/tambourine on the other side.

Sweet setup aahznightsky! The flexibility and design of DW hardware never ceases to amaze me! Your tom setup reminds me of the way Bill Bruford currently sets up his toms. Just out of curiosity, was he an inspiration to you at all in chosing to position yours that way?

Seriously you have chance to have such an equipement like that.
Awesome cymbals , drums , hardware , electronics , etc.
That is the most beautiful finish I ever see in my entire life ... The next kit I'll buy will be green for sure it's so sexy and it's my favorite color.
I like how you setup your kit too .. It turns inspirations on. With the toms on the two sides you can invent some awesome groove man.
A day ... I will have enough money =(

How's it going Mr. Bill Bruford? Nice kit.
Wow that kits off the chain, loads of thought and time and money put into that I'm sure!
Only things I could suggest would be... maybe take the 2 furthest stagg splashes and rotate them a little more inward towards the floor toms to make it a bit more symmetrical. How do you like those heads you currently have?
And also when you are doing say a multiple tom roll, how do you go about doing it? do you usually do your rolls on either one side or the other, I would think trying to cross over your hats to your other toms would cause problems.

Again, nice kit. Any sound clip of it with those heads ? Is the top row of cymbals above your head ?

Now you just need to update the 'your playing' thread!
So your not using the Bruford snare still, or any percussion? With all your cymbals now, where would your put the snare and percussion?

nah, that doesnt place the splashes the right distance from me with the position theyre in; theyre symmetrical to themselves, anyway!
I generally don't do rolls in a descending tom order with the same number of strokes on each (unless its an odd number). It might be for instance, 3 on one tom, 1 on the next, and 2 on the last, or something like that. The hat isnt in the way except when going between the 1st and 4th toms, and that just takes extra practice to get my stick up the extra height above the hat.
