View Full Version : The 1 tune that defines death metal?

Let's say that Abraham Lincoln was somehow brought back to life, and he came up to your house (or apartment), knocked on the door and, since you were home, you answered the door and there stands old Abe.
Abe asks you this question: "What is death metal?"
What song would you play for former-president Lincoln, and why?

One song will rip your face into little shreads of skin and flesh, along with bits of eyeball matter and cartilege(nose ring intact) and that is ----- Yellow, by Coldplay. Dont believe me? Play it at 300Db and let me know the outcome. Good luck! : P

Slayer isn't Death Metal......... As far as the "genre" is concerned.

That said.....I say that the band "Death" (any recording) would be a good start.
After that......Morbid Angel has released the most quality DM over the long haul.
Chapel of ghouls, Maze of Torment, etc....all great DM tunes.

A good place to start,
As these 2 bands....were 2 of the first.... who really started the genre .

Cheers.

Death is a great place to start, but Id like to throw my hat into the ring for Obituary's "Dying" and "Find the Arise" ... two separate songs, but I love the way they fit together on the "Cause of Death" album.

My favorite death metal band by far is Obituary...I even liked their slower stuff like the CD "World Demise" which was awesome.

yeah slayer aren't death, they're thrash. sorry, don't mean to be whiny. war ensemble is a killer tune to play. i'd vote slit your gut's off cryptopsy's 'none so vile' even though my favourite track on that album is benedictine convulsions. but to me that whole album is just the best death metal i've heard. hammer smashed face is an old chestnut, great to play too. deicide, morbid angel, origin, and of course nile. derek roddy's stuff on nile's 'black seeds of vengeance' is amazing. i think tracks seven, multitude of foes, through to track ten are some of the most underrated dm tracks out there. not your usual lengthy, elaborate nile stuff, just straight, no bull death metal. check em out.

Fair enough, Nodiggie. I may not know anything about death metal, but that doesn't stop me from having a lot of uninformed opinions about it. Anyway, I've heard all of the songs that have been posted here so makes me something of an expert, I'd think.
You could say that everything is death metal, couldn't you? After all, no less than Hume wrote:
"All ills spring from some vice, either in ourselves or others; and even many of our diseases proceed from the same origin. Remove the vices; and the ills follow. You must only take care to remove all the vices. If you remove part, you may render the matter worse. By banishing vicious luxury, without curing sloth and an indifference to others, you only diminish industry in the state, and add nothing to men's charity or their generosity."
See what I mean? Aw come on, don't you?

Fantastic! How can you go wrong with lyrics like these:

Torsos hang from their own intestines
Raped of all bodily extentions, stumps wreathing in a sludge
Like infection
Suffering through a Rancid amputation
A pulsating artery accomanied by some veins, slit with no restraint
Sacs of pus develop
My muscles tighten as I feel the rush
I look at your body starting gush

I slice through the limb,
a human dissection portions of half-eaten flesh in my mouth
starting to chew your now bleeding stump

I will swallow your pus your own rectal slime
I'll force you to drink
Vessels explode as needles injected
Uncontrollable
My brain tormented
Slit from head to toe, die through the torture
Disease engulfs you
Internal rot
Fresh cut wounds, beginning to clot
Ripping through flesh is what I do best
Tear off an arm
Amputated neck
Eyes removed, cranium smashed
Decomposing remains, severed in half
Dying slowly never to rest, nerves are quivering as I trip
Removal of life on the blade of my knife
Inserted in your spine, smashing through bone
Feel my hell, I feed on fright
Rape the limbless cadaver

LOL! Vikings, too.

I was in the Air Force during Gulf War I, and while I didn't work anywhere near aircraft, it was commonly reported that metal was the music of choice when the pilots were gearing up for bombing runs.

I went to a cage fight a while ago, and most of the fighters made their entrance to metal selections.

I expect that ol' Abe would have some follow-up questions upon his initial education. You'd have to explain like this: "Mr. President, you remember when General Sherman burned Atlanta to the ground and then marched to the sea, destroying everything in his path? Well, think of death metal as the theme song for that."

Death metal - music to burn cities by.

I have often thought about this. Gene Krupa Is one of the many drummers that I study and learn from. Anyway, Here goes. If a contemporary metal drummer could go back in time with his kit to Gene Krupa's wood shed in let's say, Oh, the mid 1930s. How long do you think that it would take before Gene was sitting behind the metal drummers kit trying to see how fast he could play his bass pedals? Trying the numerous cymbals, Smashing! Thrashing! And just plain havin fun! I can see Gene in my mind know, Young Gene, Blasting away at lighting speed playing more drums than he had ever seen before in one room! Wouldn't that be cool. I mean when the metal drummer explained the future of drumming to him. I think that he would be out of his mind with excitement.

Excuse me?

Who are you to judge a whole genre as not being music based on the tongue-in-cheek lyrics to a song from one death metal band? Not every DM band writes lyrics about gore, you know. There are, for instance, bands with esoteric lyrical themes (Decrepit Birth, Origin), lyrics about environmental/world issues (Gojira) and metaphysical/fantasy lyric themes (Psycroptic). Hell, there are even Christian death metal bands (Mortification, Scourged Flesh)!

Seems to me like you're just another everyday moralist fundie seeking to restrict people's freedoms. If the kids wanna listen to death metal music, let them. If they wanna listen to hip-hop music, let them. There are far more horrific things in the world today than people making death metal/rap music, you know.

You guys all seem very positive and quite serious about the music, and I do appreciate your contributions to this thread.
Question: why do you think that a lot of people who know nothing about this kind of music have the image of it being stupid and violent and mainly played by dumb-ass mouth-breathing morons?
Of course I understand why someone would find those "Rancid Amputation" lyrics offensive, but I don't think that this band is advocating a hellish scenario like that taking place in the local shopping mall.
Also, it seems to me that the musicianship displayed in death metal, at least on a technical level, far surpasses that of the ability of the guys who play in, for example, Coldplay, a band that I find sickening to the extreme.

Interesting. So it's the juvinile delinquents? Well, it's got to be more than that really. After all, some of these metal drummers are quite highly regarded musicians, with chops to burn. That shows dedication and accomplishment.
And we all know that grinding loud hardcore fast stuff is accepted as an offspring of punk, and punk is almost mainstream these days.
No, I think it's the lyrics. I think it's the whole conceit of the Viking/barbarian blood-lust bottom-of-hell imagery of the lyrical content that puts this kind of music in the place it is. Let's face it, those amputation lyrics aren't at all uplifting.
But of course I'm a 55 year old jazz drummer and I don't really get it. But I very much appreciate the skill it takes to pull that music, those licks and those beats, to pull all that off. And I hope that the people who listen to this music, those kids who wear the T-shirts, appreciate it as well. Because there's some really impressive stuff going on in there.

THANK YOU!

I had just started to write lyrics for my very first orginal song that I wrote by myself, and I'm going to call it "Fist to the Face"! But...I don't have any clue what it should be about...

I just recently joined a new band (I've gone through 3 so far), and this ones the best.

I made rules for myself:

Like the guys

these guys fit both, hopefully they'll like my song!

Anyway, I only hit people that push me too far. They deserve it.

So stop hitting people and start writing, my friend!
I'm sorry to say this, but hitting people is stupid.
How about metal music setting an example for non-violence? Can you imagine that? Take all that anger and channel it into something positive. And then, play the hell out of it!
You cats are smart enough to work up those remarkable blast-beats. So you're also smart enough to put a more positive message across. Imagine, say, The Beatles playing metal! Well, maybe that's going a bit too far. See, I'm an old guy.

Hitting people isn't stupid. People driving you to hitting them is stupid. I'm not advocating violence, just saying that no matter how hard you try to keep your cool, there'll be a point where you can be driven to use it.

But yes, you can totally use stuff like this positively. Here's a good example from my man Dez.

But, Tutin is right. People can keep their cool, but if they push you to the breaking point, it's hard to keep cool.

Anyway, how would you write a "positive" metal song?
Thats the point of metal, anger, hatred. Positive metal would be wierd (but maybe, premote non-violence?).

I think these bands know their audience and find mischievous humor in offending everyone else. I suspect that murphinelli's response, above, is exactly what they were hoping to provoke with the Rancid lyrics.

And really, the sound of extreme metal IS primal, raw and dark. It carries an intense energy that a lot of people just don't feel or respond to, and the guys that play it know this better than anyone. It's a subculture of people with the "Highway to Hell" mentality; they understand each other and as for the people who don't - the more offended they are, the better. So in a sense - to answer your question - the image they have is of their own making.

Also, it seems to me that the musicianship displayed in death metal, at least on a technical level, far surpasses that of the ability of the guys who play in, for example, Coldplay, a band that I find sickening to the extreme.

It's cool that you're open-minded enough to acknowledge this, regardless of whether you actually "get it" - and no one expects you to, if you don't. But you are right - metal in all it's incarnations can be highly demanding of musicianship. Some of the most legendary guitarists and drummers have sprung out of the metal scene. Critics say "it's just noise" - but try to play it like the pros. It's hard.

And yes, a lot of popular music is insipid.

There are a few songs about positive stuff, and their all pretty good.

But, Tutin is right. People can keep their cool, but if they push you to the breaking point, it's hard to keep cool.

Anyway, how would you write a "positive" metal song?

Why dude? It doesn't have to be always about a hatred song
For example Gojira, as schist said previously their songs are "envirometal friendly".
Is anything about saving the enviroment not positive?

Who says metal can't be positive? Here, this is one of the most positive songs I've heard in a long time:

Well, I probably could write positive stuff, but i've been stuck on the "hate" train for a while.
You can't really teach an old og new tricks. It's like if Dimmu Borgir started writing about how wonderful and great god is. It wouldn't be right or fitting for me.

I will give it a try though, just to see how it might work out.

Theres this band called Through The Eyes of The Dead, they're basically a Cannibal Corpse ripoff, but they definetly ARE death metal.

Yeah that's true.

Anyway, let us know how it'll turn out.
