Hey,
Here's me playing after a little less then 3 weeks practice on my first kit. I did practice on a pad for a couple months before this. How is my progress looking to you? My timing screws up more then a few times, oh well.

I like the offbeat ride bell hehe.
A few timing errors like you said but for less than a month on a kit I think you are doing very well. I would recommend practising with a metronome if you don't already, and also learn to count out loud - it will help your timing to no end.

Yeah I do practice with a metronome - but probably not as much as I should (I always do when I practice on the pad). Thanks for the advice on counting out loud - I'll definitely start doing that.

Nice. You kept a solid groove with a few noticeable timing fluctuations here and there. It's good to hear that you're focusing on keeping a nice pocket going without any overly flashy fills or licks. To work on my timing I practice along to music on my iPod, and I highly recommend it. Fun and educational. Keep the good work up!

Thank you for the inspiring comment. I will try practicing like you recommend, that sounds fun!

You're coming along extremely well. Your hands are about where they should be, but I think your foot is doing patterns that shouldn't been seen until at least 5 or 6 months. You're lucky to have a foot that is naturally independent. It can take years for drummers to lose the bond between the right foot and right hand. Keep it up!

Yeah, independence has been something that I've been trying to work through. I feel like my hands are actually a little behind - my single strokes are somewhat slow (around 150-155 cleanly on a decent day - 16th notes). But I keep practicing trying to get my control and independence down and hopefully my speed will naturally start coming through. I don't want to get caught up in the idea that speed is the most important thing, but I also don't want to fall behind because it is important.

Trust me, if you can do that cleanly then you're ahead. And what does 'behind' mean anyway? You can't base your improvement against everyone elses (well you can, but you probly shouldn't).

Ironcobra's right, that is a huge plus. A lot of my student's biggest hurdle is to make their right foot independant of their hand. You definately have some quality foot work going on. As others stated, just work on the timing coming in and out of fills, you sound really good.

I don't mean to sound cynical but I find it really hard to believe that you've only been playing three weeks with playing like that. I really enjoyed the off-beat ride section but for you to learn that fast is mental. Are you a drum prodigy?

dude, if that's really 3 weeks, wow!
absolutely fantastic man, i'm impressed :)
if you haven't done so already, i suggest studying the moeller technique, and the gladstone technique, and work on some dynamics, get a nice fat groove going.
Oh boy, if you can get that done, you're well on your way to being a great drummer, you seem to have a brilliant headstart :D

Totally agree. Pretty amazing for 3 weeks - prodigy with us! Just work on keeping the timing but in a decent band, the mistakes can be hidden.
Really impressed, well done.
