The remote High Hat played in conjunction with the standard high hat can be quite a nice sound. I personally use three ride cymbals, two 20" rides and an 18" crash ride. But the side (extra) 16" was the way that pap Jo first used the drum when he added the second 16" It is nothing new.
Do you need all the extras, no. You can use the book with a standard 4 piece trap set.

Eh.... sometimes yes and some times no. If you are playing metal having two hi hats is a must in my opinion. And to me more drums equal more sound options as do more cymbals.

Yes, but the guy was asking about the book "The New Breed" not metal drumming in general.
You just need to be a little creative. I used the rim of my tom as my "second hi-hat" Move kit components as needed in order to complete a certain system as well.

After watching Zak Starkey play on the Who special last night on VH1 and reading the interview with Deen Castronovo in the August 2008 Modern Drummer issue, A LOT of the time the equipment may be for show more than for go!
Castronovo (Journey) admits that he uses a double bass pedal for microphone reasons but has the double bass kit for the stage look. Zak Starkey was obviously doing the same thing on the Who special on VH1...r/s bass head was vibrating with the pedal hits, the left side (drummers left side) head never vibrated at all.
THEN AGAIN, the size of the kit really is the domain of the drummer...if you want all the equipment for sound variations, etc....go for it!
