Hello,

A friend and I have been getting together occasionally to play a few tunes. He plays bass and has a SWR LA15 100w combo. I have a 5 piece Sonor 1005. The problem we have is that he cannot hear himself or any tracks that we are playing along to. I've tried to play as quiet as possible but he's still complaining that he can't hear much. The good thing is that he's following me so isn't a problem for me.

We jam in a small room about 3mx6m which has a vaulted ceiling so the sound does get a bit out of control. I suggested I could use rods next time which may help but I wondered if you had any suggestions?

cheers
Kevin

Putting the amp on a chair or table and angling it towards his ears (by putting something under it) can help him, not you of course...

That works well, My band used to have to do that. Plus using rods will help too. I also used to put a dry wash cloth on my snare drum to dampen in down a bit more as well.

He may also consider headphones, (Possibly leaving 1 ear free).

Thanks guys, I'll take both suggestions and nail his amp to one of his ears!

LMAO

Having now recovered I'll let you know how it goes.

Get yourself whatever Pro-Mark Hot-Rods or Vic Firth Rute or tala wands. I've jammed last weekend with a friend (we were drunk man !) who has an acoustic guitar with an audio-out plug which he pluggued into a small Peavey amp. The recording were done late at night so it further needed me to play softly & quietly.

Here's a sample of the result

I used on the first tune my VF Rute sticks and I used my Regal Tip retractable brushes.

100 watts is plenty of power for a guitar amp, but for bass use, it's a pretty small amp. The size of your room limits how far he can get away from your kit, and his amp. And if he puts his bass rig on the floor, it's speaker throw is ankle height. I'd try to get his rig at least 60 cm. to 1m off the floor.
