I found this recording of my band from 1988. It was recorded from a TV show we did. The kit used on this recording was a Yamaha recording custom kit 22/13/16/18 and a Ludwig 6.5x14 hammered bronze snare drum. Coated emperor on top, ambassador snare side. I thought the snare drum sounded big and powerful for an on the fly recording on a local TV show. Check it out, it's a good representation of that snare drum's sound capabilities in a rock setting. You may have to click the play button twice once you get to the site.

That would indeed be a Ludwig Bronze! I just love the wood characteristics from this metal drum. I'm REALLY loving mine, unhammered though.

Hey Aydee, long time no post! Thanks for the compliments. I stumbled upon that relic recently and I was surprised by how powerful that snare sounded back then. I thought it was worth posting, even though it's 20 years old. It does sound dated though huh? :o)
I just finished doing a drum tuning clinic here in my home town which turned out really well. There was video shot of it, so maybe it will pop up on you tube. I'll let you know. Take care my friend, good to hear from you!

The drum you have pictured would be a Ludwig supraphonic ludalloy, which I currently play. It's not the bronze model that I'm referring to in the recording though. Same design, but the shell material is different. Either way, they both sound great IMO.

No no no......I loved the snare sound, and that wasn't dated at all.
I was talking about the synth brass hits in the tune being so typically EIGHTIES : )
Great to hear about the tuning clinic. Maybe thats the way to go.. which is for you to talk though it / demonstrate it so that people at least get the idea of it, if not crystal clear internet audio.

I knew what you meant, I was referring to the dated eighties keyboard patches too! An interesting side note to that song, the keyboard "lead" run that ascends in the middle of the song is the descending keyboard line in Zeppelin's "Kashmir" backwards.
The tuning clinic was great in that the pitch pipe technique and evrything else about interval tuning and relative tension, etc. was thoroughly demonstrated and alot of good questions were asked. Hopefully the guys found it educational and anyone who views it will find it that way as well.

Cool! We once took the " Sunshine of your Love" line, and played it backwards, ( E G E, B- Bflat - A, EE D E ), funking it up as a motif.. worked out real well

Neat. We were having trouble at the time coming up with a lead section and we didn't like any of the "leads" that the guitars or keyboards were coming up with. Our keyboard player was just messing around with stuff and he played the Kashmir line in reverse and it fit, so we used it. Ahh....songwriting at its finest!

One last side note about the recording of those drums in that song, there was no muffling on the toms and the snare had a small piece of duct tape about 2" long and 1" wide kinked in the middle and applied real close to the rim on it. That's it.

Very 80s, and yes I am old enough to ahve lived through the 80s. Although a lot of it is a bit foggy, LOL ;-)

I beg to differ. The reason it looks like a Ludalloy Supra, is because I just finished polishing it, hence all the patina was removed. Here's a pic of Bronze, Black Beauty, and Ludalloy.

I've been using exactly this drum for a decade and I've used in every conceivable musical style and it's awesome. I have other drums, but the hammered-bronze just rules everything.
I generally tune it higher than this example, but it sounds great tuned up or down.

My apologies. It looked like the supra in the first picture. That's a nice trio of drums you have there! Beautiful!
