it was fun to see this....the only thing I regret is seeing some of the Rush fans posting on message boards ripping Colbert for "cutting them off" or "his interview was not serious..blah blah"...helloooo people.... it was a planned joke and the band was in on it...hence some of the joking questions about long songs....Sheesh.

some Rush fans will never understand that humor has always been a big part of who they are. La Villa Strangiato was influenced/lifted from a Warner Brothers cartoon for Pete's sake....it's the humorless fans are the ones who ruin it all.;-)

Anyone know anything about the Neil Peart figure they had on stage? I want one.

I watched it live last night. All I can say is that it was utterly amazing.

Great showmen, and they always have been.

I've seen them more times than I can count over the years, and have great seats for the show this Saturday at Nissan Pavilion, can't wait.

That was such a great performance. Neil played the song perfectly. Did anyone notice his hi-hats were silent? I don't know if they mic'd the kit, but the hi-hats were nowhere to be heard.

I cracked up at the part about the R&R hall of fame an their next album being titled " that's bull***t ".

La Villa Strangiato lifted from a Warner Brothers cartoon? What's it from, and what's it supposed to mean?

I saw it on YouTube about an hour before posting this. Awesome performance, Neil's VLT drums sound fantastic.

Colbert just extended the joke tonight by opening the show with the band "finally" finishing the song and him waking up on his desk, as if they had been playing the song for the past 23 1/2 hours.

Funny stuff, and good to see those guys still "gettin' it done" after all these years. Seems like only yesterday I was a ten-year-old kid saving my allowance to buy the "Moving Pictures" LP.

Here is some infor I dug up on the "internets".....

The song that inspired the "Monsters!" section was the 1936 song "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott. Warner Brothers music director Carl Stalling used "Powerhouse" in his Warner Brothers cartoon scores during the '40s and '50s. The music wasn't originally written for cartoons, publishing rights for a limited catalog of Raymond Scott's titles were sold to Warner Brothers in 1943. Yet not only was "Powerhouse" used in the old "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons, it has been sampled more recently by other bands such as Devo and They Might Be Giants; more recently cartoons including The Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, Duckman, Batfink and Animaniacs, also the Cartoon Network's theme song, and throughout the Disney film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids! (without crediting Scott - Disney was threatened with a lawsuit and the matter was settled out of court). Rush didn't give credit to Scott for their use of "Powerhouse" either. By the time Raymond Scott's publisher notified the band's management of the infringement, the statute of limitations had expired on the challenge. But Rush's management, out of deference to Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Raymond was still alive at that point), and being the class act that they are, offered a one-time "penance" payment, feeling it was the ethical thing to do. All involved were happy with the resolution, and Rush has no further financial obligations. Under the settlement, they were not required to accord Raymond Scott partial songwriting credit on the piece. For additional information visit FAQ at RaymondScott.com. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington)

I love Rush, don't get me wrong. They are all class guys and brilliant players, but sometimes they are too good and their diehard fans take things too seriously. Sometimes fans of bands like Rush, Dream Theater and others it seems sometimes don't really 'get it' when it comes to the essence of rock n roll.

It's not about how many notes you can cram into a measure.

Disclaimer: I LOVE both DT and Rush, so don't hit me too hard.

Oh yea, the Colbert Repor' was terrific last night and Rush playing on it was a highlight without a doubt. Those boys can still deliver. Did you see Geddy and Alex lauging when Colbert jumped in the middle of them singing toward the end? Good guys.

Yea really.

The quote about Rush's next album being "Bullsh*t" about not being in the RockNRoll Hall of Fame is classic.

Considering some of the garbage the HOF has inducted over the years, the exclusion of Rush is nothing short of a travesty.

Seriously,

could Neil Peart be any cooler?

To rip that hard and be that funny in this context . . .

oh, and if there was ever a doubt that Rush has a really good sense of humor, check this

I still smile every time I watch this.
