Self Made Practice Pad

I have been told that people make practice pads with a mouse mat on a bit of wood, does anyone know if this gives the most realistic feel for a material that is really inexpensive or can anyone give anymore ideas for free/cheap materials that would offer a better feel?

Prob seems like a real strange question but until next week ive got NO money at all, not even for a set of sticks!

The practice pads I swear by - ping pong bats.

Nothing beats it when it comes to cheapness. And it probably gives you just as much feel as any other practice pad.
