View Full Version : Cherry stave kit
I know another one.
I did some shop improvement here it goes:
20" x 18" bass drum
16" x 14" Floor tom
14" x 12" floor tom
12" x 9" tom
10" x 8" tom
The trick is; they are all 3/8" thick, even the bass drum. All cherry wood. It will receive Beavetail lugs, and Coated heads.

Wow, amazingly beautiful set. I'm not too fond of tobacco fades but this is an exquisite set.

Beautiful work, Francois. The cherry would have been very nice w/o the fade, it's a pretty wood. Those are the thinnest shells I've ever seen you post here, I think.

Well, it's not my drum so I had to do as the client requested ;)

I went back to the shop to be sure, I was worried, because on the pics the shell look like all they have is 2 giant brown stripe, but my camera is really crapy, because in person they have a very nice brown fade.
Again sorry for the crapy pics, and I will try to take better pics tomorrow.

OHMYGOD.
That looks awesome. AWESOME AWESOME AWSOME.
I've never been an overly huge fan of fade finishes, but this one looks...AWESOME.
Reminds me a bit of the Mapex Orion finishes...but better...

I have always wondered, how would a cherry stave kit sound compared to any other kit?
I know how staves sound and all that, but cherry stave, to me, would be quite differant. Same with a full walnut stave kit.
And 3/8 of an inch is thin? Nearly a half inch of solid wood.
You want thick though, those 2 inch shells you made. My god.

3/8 if thin for a stave drum. Plywood is much, much stronger than staves or whole wood kits, so a plywood shell can be a lot thinner. That's why plywood and other wood composites are used so much in construction. A thin stave shell is more fragile and needs reinforcing rings.
Call me crazy, but I didn't like the first try, so I redone it this morning here is the result much much better.

Mmmm those drums look tasty! You have got to post some pics of the shells with hardware.

One day, my cymbals and my drums will be Canadian because of this kind of stuff I'm seeing here. I love my drums now, but one day Unix will make something for me. Great stuff.
And not to be a nerd or anything, but this is a burst finish (and a gorgeous one at that) not a fade. You'd think a bunch of drumaholics would get that wrong a lot less...

The first finish was nice but I agree that looks much better. Bit more cherryness to it. You have a very admirable perfectionist quality about yourself and your drums Unix.

Much better finish. This one looks more organic - like the coloring came from the wood itself, as opposed to be applied on.
