Well, the time has come everyone. It's time to order that Unix snare that I've been promising myself ever since crazyhorse and Unix started posting STUNNING snares.( and kits.) Yes Tutin, yours helped too.

The problem with getting such a wonderful snare from Unix is that there are too many possibilities. What I've got in my head so far is the finish from crazyhorse's birdseye maple snare. ( http://www.wrxhackers.com/NewDrums/MyStave2.jpg )

I'm also considering a lug other than the vintage tube ( http://img55.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snare05largehj2.jpg )

I don't know how well this thicker lug would blend with the finish. I also don't know what kind of bearing edges I want. As for thickness, I'm thinking about 1/2 inch. The dimensions will be between 14x6.5 or 14x5.5. So many options, it overwhelms me.

So my questions for you are... ( keeping in my mind that I want my snare to sound like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehmTBsmZhmY ) I'm not trying to get exact, this is just an example of that typical sweet, warm sound that can be used for everything.

- What thickness would you suggest?
- Should I get black chrome or regular chrome?
- Can I get S-Hoops in black chrome?
- Vintage lugs or those newer ones?
- I'm CLUELESS when it comes to throw offs/snare beds etc...

I feel like such a little boy after re-reading this, I guess I'm just so excited!

**Edit: I also want it to have a longer sustain. I want rolls to be able to blend together easily. Something similar to Neil Peart's snare from his silver kit from the 1988 YYZ solo, for a good drum solo effect.

Anybody?

I'm thinking maybe 5/8 thick. Which of the two lugs, and black or regular chrome?

You're better off contacting Unix directly---unless you just want opinions.

Good luck with it!!

I wouldn't worry about getting that sound, since with proper tuning/heads and a nice quality snare drum like this one will be you can accomplish that sound with no problem. If you're asking my opinion I don't think that black chrome will look very good on that birdseye maple finish. Like Karl said it's best to contact Unix directly since he can tell you all of his options. By the way those lugs in the second pic... beautiful.

I think that is a good thickness. It's much thicker than a a typical ply shell, but with stave construction, the wood grains are all aligned together and conduct sound much more efficiently, making the drum much warmer, even with a thicker shell. So you can get away with a thicker shell, which will give you more volume.
