I went out to buy a new 13" Remo Coated CS a while back, my favorite head, and I was amazed when the guy at Guitar Center said that not only did they not have one, but they no longer carried them. The counter man said that out of the last 3 they had, I bought one and he bought the other two. I went over to Sam Ash, and they didn't have one either.

Every now and then I like to visit some other music stores in my area (Tampa), and so the last time I did that (5 or 6 stores), not a single store in the large Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area had one or expected to have one in the future.

In years I never had trouble getting this head, and now suddenly they have disappeared. I've had to order them off of Massmusic now. It seems odd, since Coated CS is a popular snare head, and a 13" snare isn't the most popular size, but it certainly isn't rare. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this as strange as I think it is?

P.S. If anyone here uses or has used the Sabian forum, I'm the same Quiksilver. Howdy.

Hey, welcome to the forum! That's a shame about the head, and seems really odd. I can't relate because my head choices are usually nothing interesting (ambassadors, powerstroke 3s, G2s...). At least you can order them, which means that they're not discontinued either.

EDIT: Just making sure they're not discontinued... Remo's web page:

well, then there's only the possibility to switch to Aquarian with a dot or an Evans. try them out, I'm sure you'll find a good replacement.

Thanks for looking that up for me, and thanks for the welcome! I also forgot to say, I'm talking about the black dot on bottom. I've seen it called "gray dot" too.

I guess the stores must not get enough requests for them. Anyone who reads this, please call your local drum stores and verbally threaten them, asking for this head. If you get no reaction, don't be afraid to show up and get physical. Drummers unite! We shall not be moved!

As for finding a replacement in another brand, the reason I call it my favorite is because I've played its "equivalents" and it remained my favorite. Aquarian is manageable, but I've had some bad experiences with Evans.

It's hard for a shop of any sizes to stock all head models in all sizes. In the year and a half we've been open, we've never sold a 13 or 14 Coated CS. Most people go for the Emperor X or the Powerstroke models.....
