I have. It opens up some new possibilities, especially between the right foot and left hand.

Yeah ive put a floor tom next to my hats a few times and it does create new possibilities. You can play beats that you would otherwise have to cross your arms to play, so its good fun to have a mess about with. Personally im happy with a standard set up but its a nice change now and then

I put one over there recently and it just turned into a table for my set list and extra sticks...

I often put a 3rd floor tom or extra tom left of my hats, I enjoy being able to head left instead oif right for a change.

I'm not a huge fan of only having one on the left side...but one on each side is pretty cool. The motion from the second rack tom to the floor tom, when it's on the left, is a little awkward for me, but having a second one over there does open up a lot of neat ideas.

Actually, it really isn't knew; but when Papa Jo first started using an additional 16" tom, he had it on the left side. I think it s a great idea. I think Larry Mullen, among others, does this.

I think by 'new', he meant ideas and ways of drumming that you wouldn't initially come up with using a standard set up, and not innovative ideas that no one else has discovered. I still get what your saying though. I know mike portnoy uses toms on his left occasionally. It came in handy for me when i learnt a couple of dream theater songs.

Actually, I didn't mean it was not new in that it was done already. But that it is not new in the sense that when drummers first started using it, that's the way they used it.:) There is a little irony that we are not re-discovering these things.

Actually, Buddy used the second floor tom on the right side for important things like holding coffee cups and towels.

Yeah I've only ever seen him use it once or twice in his solos.

I've always played with the idea of having some toms (not just 1) fanning out in the other direction. I've toyed with the idea of having a mirror image on the other side of my hats. But that would just be too far away. I've instead tried putting not big toms there but small ones. I've also tried putting a set of bongos there just for fun. The sounds you can get from it are amazingly funny at times. Especially when you have no idea what you're doing.

I used to do that...three rototoms, with the going (from left to right) 14", 12", 10", on the left of my hi hats. Then I had bongos over the hats (the top of the hat stand went right between the two drums), going 10" (tuned higher than the 10" rototom), 8", then my "real" toms started, now to the right of my hats, going 8", 10", 12" 13", with 14" and 16" floor toms. The end effect was 14, 12, 10, 10 (higher), 8, 8 (lower), 10, 12, 13, 14, 16 for my 11 toms. I dug that a lot, even though it was a bit over the top.

DAMN that's wicked.... I'd love to have a go on it... I've always loved the idea of having rototoms on the left of my hats. How on earth did the end result sound like what with rototoms, bongos and normal toms all together?

It sounded good, mainly because I didn't mix and match too often. I just liked to have the options, so I would either use the rotos for a fill, or the bongos and maybe my high tom, or just the regular toms, depending on what sound I wanted in a song. I will say, however, that during solos I would mix them all together. At the time, I wasn't really the player I am now, so I can't really comment on how it all worked together during those solos, I just thought I was the bee's knees because I played them all! Hahaha.

I wouldn't mind dragging all that gear out again, setting it up now, with what I know about tuning and...uh...oh, let's just be honest...playing well as opposed to basically wanking off, and seeing what I could do with it.
