Finally! My Frankenstein Kit!!

Ever since I found out what a Frankenstein kit was, I wanted to create one, so now, finally I have made it!

The bass and the floor tom were sitting in a junk shop in my town and I was negotiating a price, when the owner just offered to let me work in his store to work them off! So, I worked them off (the Cortley bass drum came with a complete kit: 12" tom, 14" snare 16" floor and the 20" bass) and tada!

Specs:
20" Cortley White Bass Drum (mid to early 60's)
14" Drum One Black Oyster Floor Tom (mid 60's)
13" Pearl Visions Tom (ganked from my Pearl, which I swear I really will put up pictures of one day)
14" Gretsch Blue Sparkle Snare (late 60's early 70's)

Cymbals:
13" Meinl Classics Soundwave hats
17" and 18" Meinl Classics Crashes
18" Wuhan China

Hardware:
Tama Iron Cobra Single
various stands

Nah, I use the 18" Crash as my ride/crash, it sounds great.

Yeah, usually I'm not one for dampening, but that floor tom is a tricky number to get to sound good without a resonant head..

I'm not really sure what to do with this comment, because I only have 2 moongels on that one tom.. If I had all four it would be funnier, but right now you just kinda come off as a douche bag to me...

The blue stuff on the floor tom is tape, not moongels, and it's on there because I couldn't get the tom to sound the way I wanted, but I'm sure since you decided to comment on it, surely you know better tuning tips? I'm all ears franky.

Don't sweat it man. I've seen alot worse on some drums. If they sound good to your ears, that's all that counts.That frankenkit looks fun, so have fun with it. As far as moongels, take a look at this guys kit. http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38427

Kick and floor tom without reso? How do they sound? I mean the sustain?

Thats what the tape was for, I like a little bit of sustain, but the floor tom would go on forever, so I just put a little tape on there.. And the kick has a Emad on it, so it's pretty good sustain wise. I would have reso's except the guy I bought the drums from didn't have any of the bottom rims or lugs to any of the drums he gave me, kinda odd... I'm thinkin about buying a 14" rim for my floor tom, because I think a resonant head can solve my problem without using tape..

This set has a lot of character and personality. Some people are so uptight about their drums that it's cool to see a mongrel set with attitude. Really most people mix up their cymbals with no problem but when someone mixes up their drums it's like a taboo or something. I like to see people break the rules.

Not to play devil's advocate or anything, but why reinvent the wheel? Drums are often sold as complete sets with matching finishes and also matching wood types. Not to say there are not drums made with different woods within a single kit, or even different finishes, and not to include the realm of custom drum building. I don't mind if some of my cymbals look different from each other (they're all made from bronze anyway) but I like my drums to match. Then again, my choices in cymbals is usually more eclectic than my choice in drums.

Yes indeed, expensive stuff can be bought when I have money, but right now I want a kit that looks badass and isn't over $1000 haha.

Mine is a Frankenkit too, but I took all the wraps off and stained all the shells so they now match. I am waiting for a 10 x 6 rack and a 14 x 14 floor to come in from Ebay to add to the kit. I will refinnish these also to match. The toms are all different cheap brands, but they all came with the same hardware. Notice the bass hoops are still wine red. I'm not sure if I want to take off the red or just leave them.

The great Steve Gadd uses birch toms and a maple bass, does make him high king of mongrel drums?
