Hi everyone,

Iv got a major drum exam coming up in the next while,,and the great thing about it is that i get to choose which pieces I do for it,,,iv been playing for the last 10 years or so and was lucky in that during much of that time had an awe inspiring tutor, so id be fairly up to scratch with my paradiddles...you know? :) it can be ANYTHING under the sun, so Im faced with a near impossible task of choosing 4. Im looking to keep it nice and varied,,, some jazz, some funk, some prog, whatever really... suggestions would be much appreciated! what would YOU do? :)

Maybe you should take out one of the solos from "Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer."

I forget which it is but i think its the 3rd one thats really good and sounds really cool.

It's hard to say without knowing your level but I would go with something like:

A Purdie Shuffle : Steely Dan: Home at Last
A rock groove: Viet Now: Rage Against the Machine
A funk or R and B Groove: Tower of Power or Headhunters, David Garibaldi and Mike Clark both have books.
Art Blakey: Moanin' Dat Dere or something from John Riley's Art of Bop Drumming, which has a music minus one CD.

What's the exam for? University entrance? University graduation? Other?

What do you think others will be doing for their exam? What have others done in the past that have been successful? What do you think the examiners will appreciate?

What are your ideas about what to do? What would you like to demonstrate or highlight?

I suspect that you have a much better idea about what to do to showcase your talent and skills than anyone here.
