i THINK i have narrowed down the drum sizes for my new custom kit im buying.

i currently have 9x12, 16x16, 18x22 pearl exports

im thinking of going to go with 8x12, 14x14, 20x20.
but i fear the floor wont be deep enough to go with the 12x8... but iv tried a 10x8 and it was just too high sounding.

does anyone have the sizes im looking at? any feedback?

i play pop punk/emo type of music.. so that 'heavy' sound isnt important to me. iv always hated how deep my current kit feels.

that 'heavy' sound isnt important to me. iv always hated how deep my current kit feels.

Then you'll like the sizes you chose.

I have a Ludwig 12/14/20, and the range is great. The floor tom goes plenty low (just know how to tune them). If you don't like how "deep" your current set up is, then why don't you go with a 20x14 or 20x16 bass drum? You lose a lot of clarity and focus with such a deep drum. Plus, it's easier to fit in your car and through doors...

Who are you buying your custom kit through?

i really like the sound of the 20x20 bass... it has a lot of attack.. but not as much thud as the 22". i meant i didnt like the low end on my toms.

im going with a company called UDRUMS (or Underground Drum Co.) out of burlington, Canada.

i have extensively looked into truth, c&c, SJC, and a few others... and overall, i like the look of the udrum kits better.

hey caddywumpus, what are the depths of your 12/14/20?

also... the 2 snares i will be using are a 14x4 maple piccolo, and a 13x5 maple.

a 20/20 kick would be sweet. its your own subwoofer!

For starters, I dont like 20x20 kicks. They never sound how a decent kick drum should sound, IMO.

If I were you i'd get a standard 18x22 or 16x22 kick, 12x9 rack tom and 14x12 .

I love the sound of a 8x10 tom tuned right.

...then you'd have more reason to be mopey and depressed! :P

My kit's sizes are 12x8, 14x14, 20x14. 12x8 is really the "standard" for 12" toms. Sounds good, easy to tune, can get punchiness and a deep "doooooom" all in one. I've never tried a 12x7. I imagine the tuning is not all that different. I suppose it's more for positioning over the kick drum.

I didn't realize that 20x20 is the official kick drum of the emo genre...I should get my head back in the game, I guess

Go with the 12x8. It's closer to the square size of the 14x14, so it will share some of the same sound properties. If you go 12x7, that's becoming quite far away, your drum will sound a lot different than the 14x14, or is that what you're looking for?

Har-dee-har-harrrrr! HARRRRRRR!!!!!!

12x8 is definitely the way to go. How do you feel about your kick sounding similiar/different than your toms?

i want a monsterious kick without the thuddy aftertaste... and all the 20x20's iv played have that. my 18x22 is booming, but has a lot of thud (same with a lot of the basses if tried of that size) and i find 18x20 is kind of weak, as i like a muffled bass, so i have a pillow in there. the 20x20 is the middle ground.. its got a ton of attach, without the thud

Both of My SJC kits are 22x20 kick, 12x9 rack and 14x11 floor. I play a lot of music along the lines of we the kings, all time low, and forever the sickest kids. With coated ambassadors or coated g1s on top and clear g1s or ambassadors on bottom you get a nice tone with a good amount of resonance with the tom's tuned just right. Wanna hear it? go to www.myspace.com/whoneedsheroes. That's my band and I'm using the SJC kit I just described above. You get a really nice tone. a 14x14 will sound kind of deep, its gonna have characteristics of a 16x16, just a bit higher pitch if that makes any sense. I went 14x11 and am totally happy with the sweetness to the tone. The snare is a 14x8 maple acrylic hybrid.

I strongly suggest SJC, but I'm endorsed by the, so i guess i'm sort of biased...but check out the 14x11 floor instead of 14x14. Might be happy with that. Also, a 20x20 isn't gonna give a lot of deep punch, and that characteristic is really important for this type of music. I am happy with the 22x20, but i may have considered 24x18 or even 26x18 if I were to do it over.

Hope this helps!
