I thought these were 3 ply?

From Craigslist:

This kit was custom made in 2001 for $3000 i am the second owner. They look and sound gorgous. The diameters are 24, 16, 13, 10. The color is blue shadow. It's a transparent deep blue. The rack toms have been upgraded with RIMS mounts. I took the tom mount off the bass drum, but it will be included and can be put on in less than 3 minutes. All drums include soft cases. There is also some extra hardware seen on the piano bench for mounting the toms.
E-mail me with any questions. Thanks a lot.

So I email the guy he says first they are 9 ply, then he says they are 7 ply?

I thought Classic Maples are 3 ply unless in 01 they did it differently?

He wants a 1000.00 bucks for the 4 shells.

EDIT*

Just checked the Ludwig site, CM's are 7 ply

No, the classic maples are 6-ply and $1000 is a killer deal, based on the description!

You're thinking of vintage Luds which used to be 3-ply w/ reinfo rings, which they stopped making in the mid 70's, I believe. There's a new line called "Legacy Classic" which are the old-style maple/poplar/maple 3-ply shells but they're relatively expensive.

The center panel is 2.4 mm thick, three ply, cross-laminated maple. The middle ply runs circumferential with the shell, and the outer plies are at 90 degrees. The inside panel is 1.8mm thick, two ply, cross laminated maple. The inside grain runs circumferential with the shell. This gives the 7-ply shells a total thickness of 6mm

From the website

So yeah they are 7 ply

Maybe I'm thinking of the Legacy kits that are 3 ply.

But anyway I can get this kit w/ 24 BD for 1000.00 USD.

Good deal???? In the Pics they look clean.

I do believe zambizzi is right the 3-ply shells were from the 60's & 70's the Legacy series as mensioned are the only current Ludwigs with 3-ply shells but get ready to pay about $3500-$4000 depending on the set-up the Ludwigs you are inquiring about sounds like a good deal through.

P.S. I just went to the Ludwig website and they have a "Wood Shell Date Guide" under support they explain the types of woods, ply, etc. used form the 50's until now.that should help you out

Just scored this kit for $800.00

There is some wear and tear but overall it's in OK shape, only some dents and scratches nothing structural, the main thing is the shells sound sweet!

Sizes are 10,13,16 24bd (no snare) also came with soft cases

This BD is a Monster! The toms sound focused and punchy. The tom hardware was also upreaded to the RIMS mounts.

Somewhat unique and versitle sizes, the finish is a blue wash, very classy!

More pics to come...but FINALLY I am a Ludwig owner!
