I'm new to the site hello all. I saw this on ebay and had never seen one like this before. Anyone have any idea on the backround on it and what it's worth?

Why do you want this bass drum?
Is it for a collection or just to have?

I don't know what THAT drum would be worth...

It's a concert bass drum, obviously, and the ones from the 50's and 60's go for around $100. Maybe even less because of the economy? I don't know for sure. What do you want with it? Are you looking to collect? Play it with a kit? Play it for classical music? In the end, it's a matter of "what's it worth to you?

Its weird how pricing works for Vintage drums. Being vintage can make it more expensive, but not like insanley over the top expensive like guitars. At the guitar center, there is a vintage guitar going for about 45,000$.

That drum has a Duco finish, which means under that paint is a maple exterior, not mahogany. Cheap way to get into a clear maple 28" kick. If you wanted to leave it as is, you could build a Duco kit. Plenty of those old drums around. Collectible? Not really.

$40 max

Blue duco was pretty popular. With that finish, condition is everything. Its in good condition, but there's blue duco's out there in much newer/nicer condition.

Its also single tension, which is practically unuseable for a kick drum.

The drum looks nice, but it's already at 50 bucks...

Pretty cool drum, still pretty cheap to get into a 28, but Les is right, with the single tension, if you want to use it, it's going to be a lot more difficult than a separate tension drum.

I have a Leedy 28 single tension that I used to get used to the 28" size, and it was a pain to get it controlled enough (without muffling the crap out of it) for drum set use with just the single tension.

My 16 and 20x28" drums with separate tension tune up easy, so it's not the diameter, it's the lack of tensioning adjustability that will make things a little difficult.

But, if you just want a pretty cool drum to have or mess with, this looks in good condition and it's still pretty cheap.

I wouldn't go past $75 on it though, but that's up to you.
