I'm not sure what the economic translation between European and American is, But I recently purchased a 4X14 copper snare drum for $200 and it sounds amazing. They have fairly inexpensive ones on Ebay in 6.5X14" sizes and they sound amazing.

The JJ snare has a really nice crack to and is fairly cheap, (under $250)

For metal, look into something with a thinner shell, and more depth. 14x6.5 is a good size for metal.

This is a smaller depth, but any metal snare from Yamaha will give you a superb powerful ring that I believe is ideal for metal.

Yeah i heard Yamaha are nice , and i've always trusted them. I've also been advised Mapex Black Panther , what do you think of this?

Also another question is with my snare (its a cheapish snare that came with my pearl export) , without an O ring it sounds awful , is this because of the quality or what?
Thanks again mate

For rock/metal, I would imagine that you'd want something loud with a nice crack that still sounds good. You have a lot of options here. I personally would not go for a thinner shell as it won't be as loud, although you can always use microphones.

If your current snare only sounds good with an O-ring, there's something wrong. The stock Pearl Export snare should be able to be tuned to have a decent sound. Are you using the stock heads? Have you tuned it correctly? How old are the heads, if they're not stock?

You can't go wrong with a lot of the snares you mentioned. Yamaha has a huge selection of great snares, Mapex Black Panthers are all great. Metal drums are notorious for having a ringing sound, but are sensitive and can be loud. Brass can bridge the gap between wood and metal.

The advice I always give is to go out and play a lot of snares. Bring a drum key or two and tune the ones you like the way you would tune them, assuming you know how to tune well. Let your ears be your guide and then your wallet. Good luck.

The Black Panthers are a good choice for your dollar range, I own their walnut 6.5 but for you I would recommend one of their metal drums but their cherry might be an interesting choice as well.

I'm loving the metal snares... like that stainless steel 6.5 x 14. Really all of these snares will sound "good", same with the JJ snare, provided good tuning. Like I said before: Your best bet is to go and play as many snares as you can, even if it's not these exact snares.

What about something like http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/77348

Do you generally choose metal snares for rock/metal or is maple still ok?
