My Ludwig Green Sparkle Bonham kit: update.

Hey guys, here's an update on one of my set. I got Ambassador coated heads on all the reso's, and coated Emperor on all the batter sides. I added the L-Arm cymbal bracket on the bass drum, couldn't stand the boom stand. I changed the front bass drum head with a smaller logo one, couldn't stand the huge modern LUDWIG one ether..

What should I do next? I was thinking of adding T-Handles on the bass drum.. Any thoughts?

It looks good but I can't believe you drilled your bass drum. What was wrong with the boom stand.?

What are T handels and if they invpolve drilling the bass drum then don't do it.
In fact if they involve drilling at all don't do.

I really like the L arm even if you did drill. It doesnt really matter... you should get a kick anchor (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibraltar-Bass-Drum-Anchor?sku=446196). Thatt would make it look awesome and not creep forward.

Do you mean the bass tension rods that have T ends so you dont need a key?

It's really no big deal on a Bonham Ludwig kit, it looks, and is, normal. I think it looks way better than the boom and one less stand to deal with.

The set looks great! I really love the B/O badges. tbmills suggestion of the anchor is a good one. As far as the t-handles, if you can afford to get them, it would be a nice touch.

I have no idea how expensive they are. If they are too much, but you still want em... Do just the front.

Very nice. I like the new front head. I've never been a fan of the bass drum cymbal mount, personally. They never allow the cymbal to sit low enough, IMHO. Looks nice, though.

I still haven't picked up a cymbal arm for my ' 71 kit, but when I do I'm using it for a small crash or splash. I'm so used to using a straight stand for my ride. I've never needed my ride to be so out front. It's super comfortable to me, just hanging the ride a bit over my first floor tom.

Caprice beatiful kit. I especialy like the bass drum mounted cymbal arm I just installed one on my kit.I like the cymbal stands and the correct logo .Really finnishes it off. I plan on doing the same to mine. What kind of stands are you using?

I think the regular tension rods look fine with green sparkle. I've got one myself. However, if you were playing a White Marine kit or something vintage looking the t-rods would look great.

Yeah sure!

The set is less then one year old. I would've love to have the real 3 ply shells bonham kit from the 70's, I think the difference in sound is quite noticable compared to the Classic Maple serie. Still sounds great anyways:)

I've noted others in this thread saying you need a Kick Anchor, I must respectfully disagree with that!

The 1970's Ludwig drum spurs are just about second to NONE!! I've been playing 70's Ludwigs for YEARS and one of the BEST things about the kits is the spurs! Just take off those rubber tips and save them for later. The spikey tips on those spurs are so good I don't even fully tighten my pedal to the hoop as it will choke the drum resonance sometimes, and I want FULL volume and tone!!

They simply NEVER move with those spurs digging in!!

TRY it, you'll LIKE it!!

I found a Humes & Berg bag that holds my 26x16 bass, and I've got them for all the other drums too. Expensive though.... Green sparkle is nice, it took me a while to adjust to mine, but I'm liking it more now. My set is a Gretsch Catalina Rock that I bought to use as an alternate sound to my 6piece Mapex Pro M. I don't use it as a 'Bonham' kit though, but more of a Krupa style.

Hey guys and gals, just joined after seeing the "My Ludwig Green Sparkle Bonham kit" thread. I have an early pre-serial numbers set of 70's Ludwigs and wanted to have them recovered in Green Sparkle to do the Bonham thing, BTW I saw Bonham live in Kansas City and St Louis back in the early 70's, Zeppelin Blew me away when I heard their first album in 1969. They were to play at the Union in the University of Iowa on Jan. 13, 1969 and I was pysched but got arrested that weekend prior and missed them because of court, Waaaaaa! Sorry for digressing... I hunted out a guy to recover them and picked a guy named Matt North and sent them to him. He ruined the covering material for the 16 and wanted me to pay for more of the replacement covering and I argued with but he wouldn't budge and since he had my kit I sent more money. (this should have been my first clue) It took a little time but when I got them back I was P---ed. The kick and 2 floors were okay but the 12 and 14 toms looked like someone had left a big crap under the finish in numerous spots. I emailed him and complained vigorously but he said that's all he could do to get the finish to lay down was to add glue to the non-sticking areas and that we had talked about it, boy I must have really misunderstood that conversation! I then emailed Precision Drum where he had got the covering from and told them how poor and lame this guy is, they are awaiting me sending them the 2 drums I mentioned and upon inspection will warn other people about this guys workmanship. He even sexed up the badges which are quite rare and hard to find as they have no numbers on them. Anyway thats my story for now and I'm sticking to it! David

Hey cool kit dude, I have the same one. I just love how they sound and they are alot of fun to play. Here is a small tip for the L arm cymbal stand that I did with mine. Get a memory lock for a floor tom leg and put it on the L arm. The L arm and the floor tom legs are the same diameter, this will help hold the L arm in place and reduce the chance of it slipping. Just a little tip, good luck with the kit!

It's not sturdy since it moves a bit when you beat the ride cymbal, BUT, since I installed it, it never came loose or broke. I use the memory lock just like pcmckay, it slides on the splines of the l-arm and meshes with the L-arm mount.

Now I want a 3 ply vintage kit. They have a rounder, smoother sound. I think the Classic Maples deliver more volume and resonance taugh.
