Ok so I am thinking about getting a new snare, but I can not decide on a size. I play punk rock, jazz and everything in-between. Here are the two sizes I am thinking about.

13x5
14x4

I am only interested in these sizes so please lets stick to the two and let me know what you think....

why the 14x4, I built one and loved it while I had it but later sold it.

13X5 seems to be a decent depth, but I hear that a lot of 13s have hard to control ringing problems...

Well, what's the size of your current snare? Are you going to be using it at the same time as your current snare?

I have a few vintage 14X8 snares that I use a lot surprisingly

a 14X6 gretsch catalina maple

14X5 acrolite
14X5 super sensitive
14X4.75 10 ply maple (the first snare I built)
13X3 maple ludwig

I only have one 13'' snare so I am thinking about getting the 13X5

I really liked trying out the Omar Hakim snare, it's up there on my list of next snares. I also really liked Gavin Harrison's 12x5 sonor too, you might give that size a listen as well.

Yes I agree, you already have enough sizes in 14" to cover mostly anything, might as well go for a thicker 13", which is becoming very popular.

I am pretty sure I am going to go with the 13X5 now
