I love my cymbals but id like to upgrade my shells. What do yall think i should get?
Id like to have a kick with a little less volume and punch, something i could use with jazz if i needed.
My budget is around the $1000 mark. I like the sound of my Pacifics but I need something better.

yeah i would but i cant find an inexpensive one. i dont really want to reinvest more money in pacifics. they sound nice but they arent the best quality.

Great kit and lovely cymbals! just two questions, whates do the bead/chain thing on the K ride sound like, ive seen them around but never heard them. Oh and also, what are you running all of the drum mics into (im guessing to record). Thanks. Looking good though, if i were left handed, id love to dive on it and have a play :)

Thanks alot! The bead thing is a Promark Rattler. I filed mine down so it fits better (it comes with a weird collar that i thought was unecessary. It was sitting with the plastic touching the cymbal. I cut it down and put the felt side down and the plastic back up on the wingnut. I also cut like an inch off the beads so they dont hang off the end. You can probably see what im talking about in my pictures). It makes my K sounds like a sizzle ride. I was really surprised the first time i heard one. It really sound just like rivets! I used that cymbal mainly as a crash and the rattler gives it a little more brightness. Its a great thing to have whether you need one at the moment or not.
Oh that thing with all my cables is a Presonus Firestudio. My brother and I recently bought it and a macbook to record with. It allows us to have up to eight mics plugged in with each track seperate on the computer and it works great. If your looking for an inexpensive way to record, check them out.

Beautiful kit. Like the cymbals. I really need to get one of those rattlers for one of my pies, there's a lot of great things you can only do with rivets or get pretty close with a chain. Sweet throne, too.

Don't just get smaller shells. Birch is a wod known for being very punchy and hard-hitting. Something like maple will give you a more warm vintage sort of tone.

Thats what I have heard that about birch. Id like to get a maple custom 22-10-12-16-14. Im curious as the how much i would end up spending and where i could find some. all i can find on the internet are the maple custom absolute. did the maple custom absolute replace maple customs?

Ah rite, thanks a lot. Im going to try and find some of those beads, they look pretty cool, and seem like a worthwile investment. Ill research some of that recording equipment too, but i reckon an upgraded kit might be called for first aha. Thanks for the reply

if your wanting one, you should get it. They sound great and they were dirt cheap.

I bought mine over two years ago for $479 new. I think the price is about the same.

Theyre really good drums and i havent had many problems with them. Though the snare was hard to tune. I just need something that can better stand up to the abuse of gigging.

That kit looks like its probably a lot of fun to play. Can't beat that finish either. Small sizes though I'd be lost.

One of my friends laughed when he first saw it set up like this. He thought it was a funny combination of tiny drums and huge cymbals. He plays on a 24-12-13-16-18-14 set with 14" hats, 16" and 17" crashes and a 19" crash/ride and he has the nerve to laugh at my set.

the hi hats are 1978-82 zildjian new beats (often referred to as hollow logo)
i honestly didnt like them much at first but have grown to love to low sizzle they produce.

i also got an audix dp5a drum mic pack with audio technica 3035 overheads.

i made a few modifications as well.
i riveted my 20" k custom dark ride,
cut down the boom arm under my ride,
and made a custom internal mic mount for my kick drum.

If you wanted to get new drums, I'd advise you check out www.unixdrums.com. The owner posts here a lot and several forum members have purchased his kits. His stuff is quite affordable, especially given the customization and workmanship.

Gruntersdad and I have posted about DIY cymbal sizzlers but I'd like to try the Rattlers also. I just got a ball chain, cut it to length and stuck some velcro midway on the chain, then some velcro on the cymbal washer. There is also a dab of velcro on the hihat stand to hold the chain when it's not in use.

yeah ive definitely though about unix but i dont have the money. even if i did, i would know what to get. im still trying to figure out what i like. my next real investment will be a few goos snares. id like a steve jordan sig with wood hoops and something that is very different from that. i havent made up my mind yet. i would like to get another shell pack made of a different wood (probably maple) so i can really learn the differences and better know what i would want from unix. it would be a shame to spend $1500+ on a beautiful custom unix set and it not be the wood i needed.

Look for a used Gretsch Renown kit. I found mine for $650. only 6 months old. Took some time but they are out there.

yeah i think im gonna go gretsch for my next kit. i really like yamahas but to get what i am looking for, im probably going to have to go custom shop. gretsch renown and new classic have what i want; 20" virgin kicks with all diecast hoops. i really like the DIGS (deep inca gold sparkle) color but i like the vintage glass sparkle on the new classic better.

what are the differences between the renown and new classic?

Have you got some recordings by the way? I really dig this cymbal set-up as well, what`s the Dark Ride like with the rivets?

Regarding another kit I can highly recommend to check out Sonor`s Force series drums. The 2007 and 3007 drums are incredible for the price.
You could go for a studio configuration which consists of a 20x17.5" bass, 10x08", 12x09" and 14x14" toms and a 14x5.5" snare drum.
Really beautiful sounding drum kits, high quality and with that typical Sonor sound.

TB can you tell me what you used to put your bass drum mic through the shell? I like the look of that and have the necessary mic, but I'm not sure how to get the XLR cord into the bass drum. thanks.

yeah, i used a tip ring sleeve jack (looks like a 1/4" but has three points of connection like an xlr) and fit it into the vent.

i did not drill a single hole in the shell for this setup....

i found a metal L piece that fit the lug bolt pattern and used some bolts to fix the pipe to the L piece.

evans g1 coated over clear on toms...
with evans genera dry over hazy 300 on snare...

i accidentally got the wrong snare batter head. the genera dry is, well... too dry. i wasnt thinking.
anyway, im going to go get a coated g2 tomorrow from my local store. i want to hear that ring...

they have a very cool, mellow, open sound. i really like them on my rack tom...

Just wondering how you find it when you have to use other peoples kit and have to swap it around. I started off playing a left handed kit but then playing open handed on a righty, took a bit of getting used to but it's so much easier using other peoples kit.
