Hi guys

I have recent been working on double bass (I have only started a couple of months ago), and having read around these forums, it seems that heel up ankle motion is the most natural way to go about double bass.

Now I know that I am supposed to start very slowly using ankle motion and gradually develop, and at the moment, I need an exercise so I can get a feel of the motion. For example, in Jojo's DVD, he demonstrates that initially, we should let the fingers go, when initially practicing the free stroke, to get a feel of the motion. Is there something I can do similar for the ankle motion. Just to get myself started, so that I can isolation the motion, and then try to develop it.

just because heel up is the way most drummers play, doesnt mean that you have to start out that way. if its more comfortable to start heels down, then go for it! i started out heels down, then once i got comfortable with it, i started going heels up to gain more volume. just do what feels most natural to you and you will end up playing cleaner strokes in the end
