View Full Version : New Member, Old Ludwig

Hi guys, I'm new here. My name is Alec, I'm 16, and I've been teaching myself to play since November of 2007. My father has had these drums since the early 80s, and haven't replaced the drums since. The cymbals of course have been switched in and out over 20 years, so here is the kit that my father and I play on.

Any comments and criticism is recommended. This summer I plan on getting a PDPX-7 and some new cymbals.

Nice Kit and sticks as well. You'll find a lot of people on here have DW pedals, that's because they're really good. I'm 16 too, btw :) 'cept my dad doesn't play nor does he like me playing.

Somehow I do, too. It must be that cowbell!! Nice drums you got there. Looks like you need some new heads but you're doing pretty good. The snare drum and cymbals (two very important parts of the kit) are great, I dig that colorsound 2000. You don't see so many of them nowadays.

I think if you put a little elbow grease into those drums, you will have a very nice kit. I would strip the drums down and clean the tar out of them. Then a little Barkeepers Friend on the cymbals and you will be rockin'. I wish my dad gave me and old Ludwig kit.

Everyone obviously sets their drums up differently, but check out some of the setups on the forum and adjust your kit accordingly. I mean if you're 16 and just starting to get into the drums you might want to arrange the kit so it's easier to play.

Beautiful Luddie kit. Now, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, I understand. But a PDP X7 kit is stepping down, not up, from the kit you have right now. If you gotta have a gigging kit, or something "to call your own", then so be it. But please don't sell/trade the Luddies in for a PDP X7. Love the Colorsound. My 20" Colorsound ride.

Do you and your Dad play open handed. That hihat looks very far away from the snare.
And I agree with the others on the cleaning aspect, especially the bass drum head.

I don't plan on selling the Ludwig. It's my father's kit, so its not mine to sell. I want to get a PDP so I have a kit to call my own. The Colorsound crash is ok, but it seems to be almost a bit too quiet. Is there anyway to make it a bit louder?

Hit it harder! :-D

Groovy pocket stuff is just some drummer slang. A drummer with a deep pocket (figuratively) really has a great-feeling and -sounding groove when playing and just makes you wanna dance. It's a good thing.

appart from what youenjoy00myself said, not really. You could try getting some heavier sticks but your best bet is a heavier cymbal altogether.
