is there much of a difference between a click track and a metronome?

Rabbitfoot...no, there's not, except that sometimes you can set a click track to a different sound (I prefer a cowbell when I record, it sounds much more like playing along with a band member than listening to a clicking or beeping noise).
I think it's essential to play with a click when you practice, at least part of the time, just to work on your tempos. Also, it helps you get ready to play to a click in studio.

Well I'd be interested in cow bell click tracks if possible, but how long are these?

They aren't timed tracks...they are just like a metronome, repeating ad naseum.
Mine are cowbell and woodblock :P

The only advantage clicktracks have over metronomes is that clicktracks can be recorded/programmed to change tempos and time signatures in the middle of a song.
