It seems, Forum Member Memorisk from Malaysia is having a real hard time finding a good teacher. He's also getting knocked about with advice from members who assume he lives in a place where it is easy access good ones.

His current teacher tells him to learn up triplets. Hes wondering what triplets are for..

..I'm wondering..

how does one go about selecting a teacher? Credentials, playing experience, number of students?

What does a newbie who wants to start but doesn't know where to begin.....begin?

teachers?

EDIT- It seems Memorisk himself has just posted a similar thread too, so this might be redundant.
Mods, please kill this, if required.

With kids, their parents usually find a teacher and arrange lessons, and I don't think they're very discerning. It's not like they compile a list of possible teachers and do a bunch of research and investigation into which one would best suit their kid. It's usually more about schedule and location. They don't seem to care much about a teacher's credentials, they just look for someone who teaches in/around their neighborhood, has an available time slot that doesn't conflict with school, church, soccer practice, cub scouts, etc. and won't take them to the cleaners on lesson fees.

Beginning adult students are a little more choosy. Most of them have an idea of what they want to get into (jazz, rock, etc.) and they'll find a teacher that specializes in one thing or another. But they're also very concerned with location, schedule and $$$.

I wanted to jump in here really quick. You see, I also advised Memorisk to find a good teacher. At the time that I replied I hadn't even bothered to notice that the guy is in Malaysia !

I guess that wasn't much help for the guy.A little more attention to detail on my part was needed here...
