can anyone suggest the most commonly used rudiments to learn for timbales?

Single stroke roll, single stroke four, single stroke seven, single paradiddle.

I recommend you learn all the rudiments. Tito Puente was a drummer and knew all the rudiments. Flams, singles and doubles tend to be used the most, but learn them all.

hmmmm....Changuito (do you know who this is?) uses some wonderful stickings in his solos. Many Cuban drums who play doubles play them very...well..I guess "tight" would be a good way to put it. Very intense doubles.

yes from a veteran timbale player , Chanquito is highly recommended , theres is a book you can get at any guitar center entitled Changuito a masters approach to timbales , that is very good also at helping beginners with the timbales
