My favorite stick to use on the set is my Pro Mark 747's Jap Oak...The feel like a 5a, but are more thick up on the shaft so they last longer

On the practice pad i use Pro Mark Jeff Moore..There really thick and long (Length 17", Diameter ,720)

Lastly on the V drums im using the 747's

Sticks - Vic Firth Signature Series Akira Jimbo.

Bundles - Vic Firth Rute 505.

Brushes - Regal Tip Hickory Handle 550W.

I tried vic firth signature series akira jimbo but i kept getting blisters on my hands and I would sometimes bleed. I went on vic firths web site and checks out were they got there wood. i found out that Los Cobos had the same wood but with a different finish on the sticks. I tried them out and little did I know I havent gotten a blister for two years.

Alot of them tend to be really expensive, and not so great sticks. ie joey jordison sticks, my friend payed 30 something bucks for them, turned out to be alright, but nothing special..

Really? which pair do you have? I just recently bought the heavier pair of weckls ( the one with the darker finish ) and i like em, but not that much. I guess just the feeling that im playing with his signatures makes me feel special inside. But i do like the fact that i seem to get a great deal of power out of them for the size. I just wish that they would be a slight bit on the lighter side.

Jazz- John Riley Sig (Don't Last A Long Time), Bill Stewart Sig (Also don't last a long time), Vic firth 7As.

Rock- Vic Firth Charlie Watts Sig, 7As, and 5As depending on the song.

Funk- Dave Weckl Sigs (Orangy Finish)

i can't believe i just read 8 pages of forum about sticks, but i just can't get enough of people's opinions on everything drums!

I like to use Vic Firth 5BNs. They're nylon tip, so there's plenty of cut, but they're also bigger, so that bottom end from the drums, and wash from the cymbals can really come out. Most of the time i can't use these because i tend to play too loud, and don't like to have to hold back.

my main sticks are vic firth 5ANs. i used to break a ton of these, but then i lowered my cymbals a couple inches, and started paying some attention to how i play, and now my sticks last months.

when i'm playing jazz, or small gigs, i'm always using my Peter Erskine ride sticks. they're still fat enough to fit my hands, but the taper and tip makes for a quiet, responsive, and articulated stick. A+ on this stick.

as for anyone wanting to use the Ahead sticks... i got the joey jordison model, and all the way back home i really liked them. the balance was amazingly comfortable, they were heavy, but not big. Then i played my cymbals with them. Zero attack and response compared to a wood stick, and everything i played was completely washed out. i wish i had had a chance to try them out before, or someone had told me that they did that. it really sounds like using the butt end of a stick on the cymbals.

i had been using 2Bs till i found an old pair of jazz 3Ds which i really like. Unfortunately, i dont think they're made anymore. i like them cause they're small but heavier than 5As, for example - 5As feel like i'm playing with nothing, and 2Bs i realize now are tree trunks heheh. the bad part is, the tips on the 3Ds are chipping alot by now... i need 3D-esque nylon tipped sticks!

also, are the promark japanese oak sticks substantially heavier than their hickory counterparts?

I feel like goldy locks and the three pairs of sticks here.
I loved cheap 5B's Guitar Center brand or Z's then got some cheap 5A's but now I found these Pro-Mark 747 japan oak and they feel just right in my hand and they are heavey enough to get that bounce back I like. They are Neil Peart Millennium II sticks. I have played with 747 sticks before but they must not have been oak they felt light.
So there you have my stick choice.Gotta love the hard woods.

Anybody tried eXcel drumsticks?? I seen someone, forget the name, talking about them here a few months ago, and bought some out of curiosity, not a big fan of "powersticks" but the "speedsticks" and regular sticks are really cool, nice feel to them and they're practically indestructible, great sticks.

zildjian 5b. quite heavy sticks, almost feel like a 2b, when i play them i feel i have a lot of control, wheres when i play my pro mark 5a's i feel like im playing with a pair of twigs. wood tip, awsome sticks.

I use Vater sugar maple Blazers Which are close to the feel of the Thomas Lang Sticks yet they have a slightly better feel when applying them to moeller techniques, i can play the way jojo mayer does with only these sticks, matched or trad. is also something to take into consideration when choosing sticks alot of drummer tend to pick lighter sticks because its easier for them to play fast whereas if they switched to a heavier stick they would realise that their playing would become much more precise and controlable, also lighter sticks when used playing fast can do lots of damage to your finger joints, its a good idea to choose a stick that isnt making your hand tighten to close the fulcrum , but a stick that sits perfectly in your hand as though there is nothing there and your just closing your hand, when playing lighter peices it is obviosly easier to use smaller lighter sticks e.g 7as etc. also when your playing with lighter sticks in a heavier environment, because the sticks are smaller they tend to slip out of your hands thus getting rid of the whole idea of the fulcrum and using only the thumb and first two fingers causing damage to the joints, this is how you cause arthitis, when joints are over stretched repetitivly.
if younger drummer realised that heavier bigger sticks are sometimes better they would realise less effort is needed to acheive double stroke rolls etc because there is more wood for the vibration to resonate through thus making a larger reaction to being hit.

hope this helped

I play three types at the moment; all Vater.

5A Los Angeles --> just a great all-round stick

New Orleans Jazz --> very similar to 5A but a little thinner and lighter. Nice for quiet or delicate stuff

3A Fatback --> like a 5B, but with a quick taper on the shoulder, more weight up top. Great for rock and heavier playing. Using less since I got new Bosphorus cymbals

I remember someone was asking if anyone used Vater Pro Rock. Actually I would have but just that the sticks seem too thin for me.

I used to use Zildjian, then Vic Firth, and now very happy with my Vater Los Angeles 5A sticks. Well balanced, and really durable. I tend to hit very hard. I might try Vater Universal or Vater Excel soon though. Found my favourite brand, but not yet my favourite stick. I kinda like small, but not too thin sticks. For the fast and hard stuff, ya know?

Wow that was exactly me until just recently. Although my main sticks are still the 747's, im branching out to heavier and lighter sticks. But the pro marks are just such perfect sticks. Amazing for rock and funk, also they play just fine for jazz considering the size of them. Extremely versitile.

I had a pair of regal tips years ago, and I remembered them as being pretty good, compared to the various others I used. So when I started playing regularly again a few years ago, I tried them again - I settled on the Jazz model, they suited me fine. Recently my playing has changed, also my band, and I looked around for something just a little heavier - tried some different makes and sizes, and decided I still liked regal - but the rock are too heavy, the 7a's too light and short, etc, etc - finally I discovered a model called JC on their website - never ever seen it in the shops. Perfect! just a tad lighter than rock, with a slightly longer taper, like the jazz, but a bit meatier. And they stay in my hands!! I suspect they might be named after Joe Calato, the boss man - his own preference maybe??

Regal Tips are a good make like you I had a pair very early on, but when they began to shred i bought some Vic 5A's which began to shred even quicker, but when i bought a kit in london i picked up some Vater 'Cymbal Sticks' which were very light and sensitive, a good width and stood up to anything, they seemed to dent rather than flake, which i preffered as when the tip flakes it really affects the sound on the ride.

Now i use Vater Manhattan's, I never liked Vic's partly because they are so common but also the Manhattan's are half an inch longer, and now i can't play with anything shorter.
So it's Vater all the way now.

Yes Vater's tend to be lighter and their centre of gravity is also shifted towards the tip end just a fraction. I think VF's are denser and more 'factory conditioned' than Vater's.

Lovin the round tip, and the nylon is really solid and makes for a pretty crisp sticking sound on le cymbals. i've since converted back to nylon tips, they just sound more defined on the cymbals than the wooden tipped stick i've come across.

Ahead sticks reduce cracking of cymbals, keep the cymbals cleaner than wood, and reduce vibration so they're better for joints than wood.

For the drum set I prefer Vic Firth 5B, or maybe 5A if it's a smooth song or music style.

On the snare drum in drum corpses I use 5B, power 5B or Corpsemaster Ralph Hardimon signature sticks if its an outdoor concert or march in a loud piece.

Silverfox Tapered 7a's. They feel quite heavy to me...

Maybe i just have really light no-name 5a's.

But 7a's for me always, i love the lighter touch and articulation i can achieve, theres no need for a heavy stick for a heavy player.

It seems everytime I fall in love with a pair of sticks, i find something wrong with them.

I've been using vic firth 5b's for the longest time, and they do last, but the wood tips crack so easily. I tried firth 2b's, and one stick cracked in 1 week. So, until i get more money, or an endorsment deal, im using these maple 5b drum sticks, from a little company. Cost just over 2$ per pair, so i get like 4 pairs for one Vic Firth, so you can't go wrong. And they actuely arent that bad. They're straight, light, and durable so far........

For practice, i gotta' love My Lars Ulrich Ahead sticks. No problems with them so far........

I recently moved away from the Ahead Tommy Lee concert sticks and moved to the Sean Kinney Vater signatures. They are 16.75 inches long and are .620 width. They are 'nude' so they do not slip. Very nice, heavy, solid sticks.

I also use Bob Rock Promark signature stick which is .650 in width buy 17.5 inches long. Very heavy, but they feel good.

The lighter the stick, the harder it seems to be for me to play. LOL. It must be my crappy technique.

But I don't think I will move back to the Ahead sticks.

I've tried with Promark 5a, 2a, 5b, 2b; Ahead 5a, Xl Rock Studio, And thomas lang Vic firth Signature Stick

i personally prefer the thomas Lang Stick ( quite big ) it has a nice wood tip and the add a nice punch to my drumming. ( and the sticks have a nice white laquer that looks great :D )

Ahead makes good sticks but they are quite heavy sticks (Xl rock is heavier than lang's stick ) But the feel and rebound is awesome.

you can try with lang's stick for me it's the best in this moment.

Regal Tip:
Quantam 3000 wt
Power Rock (double butt)
5BEWide Nylon tip
7B/Bernie Dressel
9A
3B custom cut to 16"

Vic Firth:
Buddy Rich Sig.
Charlie Watts Sig.
5B Original Nylon tip

Pro-Mark:
Rock Knocker (double butt)

On sticks other than the Regals, I use Krylon's "Tripple Thick" Clear Glaze spray on them.
It replicates the Regal coating real well, and makes the non-Regal sticks feel great.

So if anyone likes the Regal feel, but like other sticks, Krylon "Tripple Thick" Clear Glaze works great.

In the US, you should be able to buy it at any big hardware chain, or Home Depot...K-Mart...Meijer...places like that.

I get mine at Wal-mart and it's a little less than $3 a can, and a can will do about 12 pair.

I'm fond of the Pro Mark Neil Peart model (747's) for the harder stuff I play (I mean heavier, not more difficult), and P.M. white oak 727's for lighter things. Sometimes I grab a pair of P.M. 5As to find the middle ground, and when I practice alone I like heavier things for a better workout. I've found that white oak seems to have a better balance than hickory, and also reduces splits and breakage. I need to find something with a ball tip for my own solo music, but havent decided on anything yet.

Pro-Mark's 808 sticks have a ball tip and feel pretty good.

They come in Hickory and Oak, and the Ian Paice model is slightly longer 808.

The Ian Paice model is pretty sturdy, and get's a little bigger sound from the extra bit of length.
It also seems a little more balanced, because the 808's taper is short, and the extra length evens out the throw.

I now use Vater Stewart Copeland Standards... which are fantastic! Only trouble is they're an absolute ball ache to get hold of (It seems) in England!

I remember using them for the first time at a practice... having previously used Dave Weckl Evolution signature sticks, and Adrian Young siggys (random choices, I know!), I immediately noticed increased response and speed, plus these sticks are great for rim shots (oddly enough!). As a matter of fact, at a recent gig where none of the kit was going through the house PA (even though all of the drums had mics?!?), someone commented that they thought my sticks were mic'ed up when I did a count in!

Crazy_drummer_16

I use Vic Firth Dave Weckl signatures for my normal playing, when i need to play softer Pro-mark hot rods, when I need to play louder Pro-mark Rock knockers or DC10s. However Vic firth takes the cake as my favourite pair of drumsticks, they're 16" long but are fast and have a great leverage point, when they don't get chewed up as much and when they do it doesn't take a bite out of the sound, and the barrel tip gets great rebound, and I can play precisely or I can play "fatly"? Well I use Dave weckl stick for all kinds of playing: Rock, Jazz, Orchestral, Fusion, Soft, and even Metal.

I'm hoping that my favorite sticks for now turn out to be the Vater 5A's I just ordered. I've been trying to learn with a pair of Ludwig 5A natural hickory that the music store gave me with the drums.

As my hands have gotten more sensitve to feel, I realized that one stick is alot lighter than the other. Really mismatched!

Got the Vater Los Angeles 5A's the other day. These are a joy to practice with. Nice (even) weight, substantial feel, smooth satin finish, good rebound. What a difference a good pair of sticks makes.

I've tried many many sticks. The most durable for me so far have been Regal Tip. I've fallen in love with their 9A. But I've always gravitated toward maple drumsticks. I'm about to look into some sticks that are cheap and in maple because I don't break sticks that often and I get bored of playing the same sticks for a long time. Also, name brand sticks are expensive. I bought like 4 pairs of those Regal Tips and I haven't broken the first pair and it's been like 6 months. But anyways, I've been looking into Ayotte drum sticks and played a few models. They are surprisingly great feeling.

The most awsome sticks i've played so far, for me are the Vic Firth Jack DeJohnette Signatures. I like both the white wood tipped ones and the green nylons. They're the most versatile sticks I've tried, simply because they are designed with jazz players in mind - DeJohnette, like:)) - but the paint makes them heavier than a natural finish pair of sticks, which makes them a lot better for rock stuff than a similar natural finish counterpart.
And also, what I discovered was that the paint keeps the wood together kind of better, it just makes them break a lot harder. I've broken the Rock Vic Firth model faster than the SDJ (true, back then I was fighting my technique:P, but anyways). And for a truly violent sound you can rely on playing them reversed, like Vinnie Paul does (with his Rock model:))).

I use a bunch of different sticks (all Pro Mark) but I like the Paul Wertico Sig. stick best. It's an 808 made from hickory, rounder tip, and 16" in length. It's very similar to the Ian Paice model but the Paice's are 1/8" longer and I THINK they are not quite as round on the tip. I'm going off pics because my local store doesn't have the Paice's in stock so maybe the tips are the same.

If I was ever blessed enough to have my own Signature stick, I would take the Pro Mark Ed Shaughnessy sticks (707, oak, round tip, 16 1/4") and make them into 808's, either oak or hickory. Ed's sticks are AWESOME and have the best tips I've ever played, but for the size of my hands, not quite thick enough (especially on harder/louder songs).

Pro-Mark Japan Oak 747's. Basically a 5a with a heavier end. I have never liked hickory sticks, to me, the wood is so dry, dense, and light, that it will crack easily, and a well placed relitivly hard hit on a rim will break a hickory stick right down the shaft. Japan Oak, is a softer, heavier, and a little less dense. They sort of shave down rather than just breaking when the time is time. But anyways, thats all just preference.

My current sticks, which are my favourite so far, are the Vic Firth Andrew Hurley sticks. They fit great in my hand, and are a bit heavier than normal. I plan on getting some of the Danny Carey signature sticks and the Tommy Lee Ahead's to try as well.

vater sugar maple 5a. light yet balanced, versitile blah, blah, blah. I just really like their feel. They don't last long if youre a heavy hitter but they feel just great. I haven't used a diff pair of sticks since finding them about 4 years ago.

Hey guys. For years I've been using Promark's L.A. special 5B and one day I decided to get me bigger sticks, for exploration only. And so I went with Rainbow (it says they're made by Vic Firth but I don't belive it) ROCK model. It is 17" long and 17mm in diameter. I play with butt ends and man, I loooove those. These sticks rock. Been playing with them for a year and half and I'm not stopping. They're heavy but it's actually everything I've been searching. And they're cheap as hell. 7$ for a pair of balanced hickory sticks. Love 'em!!!

for jazz and funk, i have to say vic firth 7A.

for rock and metal and what not, i like 5A and 5A N,

sometimes for practice i'll pick up a heavier stick, like a 2A, but i generally stick with the above two.

After significant forays into Ahead, Hornets, Pro-Mark, Vater, Vic Firth, and Zildjian, I have found several sticks that I would not hesitate to buy again. They include the following: Hornets 7A, Pro-Mark 707N and 707W (Ed Shaughnessey), Vic Firth Dave Weckl, and Vater Stewart Copeland. Vater proved to be the most durable hickory models while Pro-Mark's Japanese Oak were the most durable overall (while Ahead's aluminum/plastic hybrid is in a class of its own - although it's an unplayable class)

But if I had only one stick to buy for eternity, it would be the 16" X .540" Round Bead Wood Tip Vater 7A Manhattan. Just a wonderful fit, balance and sound.

I normally wouldn't either but you just can't find these in a store (in Boise anyhow). According to the Cascio catalog, they're the same dimensions as the Jack DeJohnette stick...well that was just wrong. Not only are they shorter but they're smaller in diameter.

I might give them another shot...I'm not sure. If it weren't for the weird tapering butt they'd be great sticks.

I myself am a Vic Firth man, but I occasionally use Vater. I think that every stick company has something good to offer, and that in the end it is just about the feel. I know my brother is a Pro-Mark lunatic and argues with me constantly about why Pro-Marks are the best. Whatever feels good to you is all you need to know. With that said, my favorite stick models are...

Vic Firth Hickory American Classic 5A- My favorite stick. Versatile and comfortable!

Vic Firth Hickory American Classic 5B- Next to the 5As, these are my favorites.

Vic Firth Hickory American Classic 2B- Good for rudiments and slower rock.

Vic Firth Hickory American Classic 55A- Between a 5A and 5B, so naturally I love it!

Vic Firth Peter Erskine Original- Makes my ride sound even better. Amazing for Jazz.

Vater Hickory Los Angeles 5A- All around good and Vaters last forever.

Vater Hickory 5B- Just as good as the Los Angeles 5A

Vater Stewart Copeland Standard- This is my all time favorite signature stick!

Well, I hope this helps. Try all of these sticks out sometime and I'm sure you will love them!

I'm gonna step out of the box a little on this one. Within the last 6 months I've been introduced to Silver Fox drums sticks and they are great! Here's the specs on the model I use

MODEL LENGTH BUTT NECK BEAD TAPER
SF-SD-1 17" .635 . 273 Acorn Long

Luckily one of my local drum stores had these sticks available and they were recommended by one of the drum guys, according to the silver fox website they're the only store in my state that is a dealer, (thank god for non-Guitar Center stores) anyway I use a bigger longer stick but I use the maple version which keeps it fairly light and they have some sort of coating over the stick that keeps it from "chipping" as much. Now they do break like a normal stick but the coating does seem to help them last a little longer. Before finding these stick I used Vic Firth then switched to Vater which I liked a lot. As long as I can readily get these sticks or order them, I'll keep with these! I know most people would probably have to order them so I'm not sure how they're costumer service is hey it's worth a one time try!

Anybody used Regal Tip on here?
Ive heard that they're good, but never used them.

I picked up 2 pairs of Regal Tip 5A's after not having used them for years, and I really like their weight and balance. They're the same thickness as my other favorite stick, the Vic Firth 55A. My hands get really dry in the winter (to the point where the skin on my knuckles will crack and bleed), and I've been reaching for the Regals more because of the grippy lacquer they use. They're straight, pitch-paired, well balanced and durable, a very under-rated stick IMO.

Regal Tips aren't as popular as Vic/ Vater/ Promark, but they're every bit as well made. With their exclusive lacquer finish, they offer something different; you're not going to find another stick that feels like the Regals (there used to be a brand called Capella which had a similar finish to the Regals, but I think they're out of business). Some like the finish, others don't. As far as some sticks being weaker than others, EVERY brand is going to have some bad sticks out there. Wood is a natural material, with a lot of variation. Picking out a strong pair of sticks is about looking at the grain and listening to the pitch of the sticks, NOT just what brand they are. I think every brand makes good sticks, but its up to you to inspect and select a solid pair, instead of just grabbing a pair out of the bin and heading for the register. I've also used the Vic X5B in the past, great stick, a little too big for me these days.
